Decisive Moves:Torre and Antonio Opt Out

The papers confirm the silent buzz...

Veterans Torre and Antonio opt out of the Olympiad qualifier which began yesterday, July 1 at the Kaban ng Hiyas, Mandaluyong City Hall.

GM Eugene Torre says he's not feeling well and finds it difficult to go through the 17 round qualifying tournament. Interestingly he also offered his services by saying

“But if they still need my services, I would be very much willing to play for the country,”

This could be the most important feeling "unwell" for Asia's first grandmaster and the Philippines as he would be ending a record 19 straight Olympiad appearances which began in Germany circa 1970 (as wasn't born yet!).

No words from the country's top attacker, GM Joey Antonio about his decision not to join the event. Also missing the event is FM Roderick Nava due to health reasons. Maybe next time!

On the bright side, our country's masters will be led by no other than GM Wesley So in the hunt for the five spots that will represent us in the coming Dresden Olympiad.

I guess the changing of the guards has really happened and these are one of those moments that proves it. Wise, reasonable and authoritative leadership should prevail for the common good. With change comes resistance.

Reality setting in, changes taking place!

Without our veterans who've served the country well, it would be interesting how we will fare against global giants. I find it wise to do a qualifying tourney without any seeding!

Congratulations to NCFP!
