Till then

Hello there my dear friends, readers, and fellow chess fans!

After 2 years filled with excitement and discoveries here in our philippine Chess Chronicles blog, I am saying goodbye for awhile.

This blog allowed me to reach out and yes, help in a little way to publicize the activities and happenings in our Philippine Chess.

With GM Wesley So leading our country towards a revived (hopefully) kingdom, I hope that when the flame heats up again (dont know when) for me to rave and rant here, GM Wesley would have hopefully reached his full potential.

Meanwhile, do visit Malibay Chess Club blog by rusticbull for updates on chess and yes, that Filipino chess blogger from down under, Amiel del Rosario and his The Closet Grandmaster blog. Mind you, he is an award winning chess blogger and yes, he is a Filipino.

Of course never miss an article from Chess Piece by Mr. Bobby Ang. Something really big is cooking and there is not other man good for it than Mr. Ang.

Thank you to all of you!

Watch out for my new blog and it is called Pinoy Sa Morocco.

Bye everyone!

Beware: Downandup Worm

Hey there!

As my chess blog takes on a hiatus mode right before my Morocco trip, the world has seen history unfold with Barack Obama taking his oath and IM Sevillano winning the Western Class Championship in California, US of A.

And yes, there is a windows worm that is spreading thru our computer system like err, a computer virus... it works like this.

And before I forget, someone tried to guess who owned the set of eyes in the picture I posted last time at here. Sorry, he is not Capablanca.

Dig deeper guys.

Oh yes, before I forget, I have a copy of the updated Ultimate Collection by Mr. Edmund Beronio, we'll post bits of his golden work here in the days to come. Watch out.

Zurich Chess Club is 200 years old and they are celebrating it in style.

Pinoy Chessers, Where art though?

Chess Piece column available now at BusinessWorld Online. Again, do make sure you read the article before the curtains closes and yes, "pay-per-view" mode switches back to on.

"...almost caught up with the leaders by winning again, this time over Club Intchess of Singapore 3.5-0.5. Take note that their board 2 player is a Filipino, IM Julio Catalino Sadorra. Recall that in the Dresden Olympiad their board 1 player was IM Enrique Paciencia, another Filipino. Who are the other Pinoys working in Singapore? Well, let’s see: GM Nelson Mariano, International Masters Rico Mascarinas, Lito Maninang, Domingo Ramos, Yves Ranola, Luis Chiong and several more. And you wonder where all our talent is going? " - Bobby Ang

Same goes with our fellow Filipinos going overseas as teachers, nurses, engineers and other skilled professionals. I'll be one of them in the next 2 weeks.

Blog Carnival

Hey there!

Check out Jack Le Moine's Blog post called Blog Carnival. In it you'll find blogs that deals with chess and more about chess.

The long wait for our very own GM Wesley So to play in his first ever Corus Chess Tournament is almost over as he now heads to Europe. Reportedly, he was scheduled to board the plane at 10:30 am today and hopefully he gets a good rest and be ready for his first game.

A rating of 2627, GM So is the top seed in the Group C of Corus 2009 along with other 14 GM's, most notably British GM David Howell (2622) and Swedish GM Tiger Hillarp Persson (2586).

Good luck Wesley!

Sun Tzu and Chess

Here's something I got from my seatmate in the MGIS faculty room:

"Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before the defeat." - Sun Tzu

What was he thinking when he said that? Hahahaha! Was he, in his lifetime, able to play the Royal Game?

As you all know by now, DEPED has sent out it's signed memo as of January 8, 2009 about including chess as a course of study in Philippine schools.

Today, I read an article called "A brilliant move" in one of our daily here in the library. One thing though, the implementation of the said move will be a different story. Hopefully it becomes a means to improve the the education of the Filipinos as a whole and in general.

The answers to the how's of this issue will have to be seen, let's wait then for further development. Sounds good to me but as always, we'll have to assess things based on it's results.

IM Kim Steven Yap

IM Kim Steven Yap according to Mr. Bobby Ang, read here before it switches to a "pay-per-view" mode.

An addition to Philippines' roster of young masters whom we can send abroad for our country's pride! Congratulations!

What happened to Mr. Ang's column at the INDOCHESS Site? I checked awhile ago and it is outdated.

Chess In Philippine Schools

Hey there!

Much has been written about chess in the schools programs all over the world, much has been said and in fact it has slowly and surely given financial back-up to a more or less sleepy chess industry, assuring the chess kingdom of a chess-playing population.

Our friend Rusticbull wishes, in his latest post called Chess, Where? and in it, he is calling for a revolution, a cultural one. Wishes like these are well, wishes that can come true but would have to take some time and effort.

We all are part of a revolution. A cultural revolution and bloggers are playing a major role in this. Keep it up all you bloggers!

And about chess in Philippine schools, I can say the Department of Education has helped developing our Royal Game by sponsoring the Annual Palarong Pambansa where chess is one of the major sports.

In the private sector, schools have helped too in their own chess programs by offering chess clubs, chess clinics, chess varsity and chess team tournaments on a year-round basis.

Sadly though we do not have as of now, programs like this and this. Inspiring? Inggit-ing? Hahahaha!

Ateneo de Manila University in katipunan I heard has quietly but effectively started a chess clinic which I hope one day will become a school on it's own. Xavier School in San Juan also has been conducting chess clinics headed by Mr. John Sy plus NM Erwin Carag and IA Rolly Bautista.

Let's have more of these in our country please!

And onto international chess.

Corus Chess Tournament 2009 is only days away and yes, our very own GM Wesley So will be playing in Group C. An invitation only tournament which gives all of us the air of eliteness, we hope and pray our wonderkid tops his category in his first try. Good luck Wesley!

Chess Web Publishing

I found a blog called Chess Web Publishing by Nikolai Pilafov also of Susan Polgar Blog. Check his other great work here.

This blog wishes to provide chess bloggers the tools for publishing chess games, much like the one we find at Chess Publisher.

I think I'm one of the last few bloggers who found out about this but I really am sure I'd take a closer look in time and try to use it here at Philippine Chess Chronicles.

To all those who've shared their know-how in chess and publishing, thanks to all of you, I mean it, salamat po!

GM So: Record Breaker at 15 y.o.

With the release of FIDE year-end ELO rating, Mr. Bobby Ang's prophetic statement "As GM Wesley So continue to break records after records in the history of chess..." we saw how the young prodigy from Bacoor, Cavite register the highest ELO rating any Filipino has achieved with 2627 at a young age of 15 years old.

Wesley has eclipsed Philippines' first super-GM Mark Paragua's 2621 in April of 2006, currently ranked 4th. El Eugenio, is on 2nd spot with a rating of 2560, his highest rating in a career that span from 1970's up till now. Philippines' 10th grandmaster, John Paul Gomez of De La Salle University lands on 3rd spot with a rating of 2539. On 5th spot is Gm Joey Antonio Jr with a rating of 2519. There goes our country's top five.

We now go thru the next 5, from 6-10:

Top 6 GM Darwin Laylo 2504
7 IM Rolando Nolte 2488
8 IM Roland Salvador 2476
9 IM Richard Bitoon 2473
10 GM Bong Villamayor 2471

And in the women's category, our top 10 players are:

1 WFM Sheerie Joy Lomibao 2185
2 WFM Catherine Perena 2184
3 WFM Sherily Cua 2143
4 Daisy Rivera 2094
5 WIM Beverly Mendoza 2045

6 Christy Lamiel Bernales 2043
7 WIM Cristine Rose Mariano 2037
8 Jan Jodilyn Fronda 1970
9 Rida Jane Young 1957
10 Jenny Rose Palomo 1882

In the country rankings, our country fall on the 33rd out of 148 nations for the men's while in the women's category we fall on the 50th out of 113.

It was another year of pawn pushing, time scrambles and politicking in the chess arena.

Have a new and productive year to all of us!

RP: 4th in the 1st Asian Club

Our young all-GM team placed 4th in the inaugural 1st Asian Club Cup, Al Ain Chess Club of UAE took the gold, Qi Yuan Club of China silver and Fair Shams Chess Club of Iran bronze.

IM Enrico Sevillano tied on 3rd with GM Yury Shulman, IM Samuel Shankland, FM Erik Hansen, Luis Belliard by scoring 5 points in the North American Open Chess ahead of fellow Filipino, GM Rogelio Antonio Jr.

Congratulations!

Here is a game I had moments ago at FICS, it was a 4/g and this was a thrilla' for me as I threw in all I've got and win with .06.4 sec remaining against my opponents 25 sec. My King was 1 move away from being trapped and mated. Watch:

Although I missed the 20th move RxQ which I thought I would make but then seizing my chance to push my pawn and attack the enemy King was more attractive to me.A win is a win anyways.

Nice one!
