Polgar's Gift to Mankind

The Hungarian born Polgar Sisters got their psychologist father to thank for in much of what they are and what they have become now.  Laszlo Polgar believed in the "nurture" aspect of giftedness and that genius is made not born.

A psycho as he was, he was great and believed pretty much in what he studied and worked on in his lifetime and that is Psychology. Nuts crack the best ideas I believe and Laszlo Polgar had a great vision for his children. He experimented in what he studied and he produced three grandmasters who are all females. The Grandmaster Experiment proven wrong the age old belief that women play below par their male counterparts.

We won't have all these enlightening literature about chess training were it not for the breakthrough work of Laszlo Polgar. We should also be grateful to him for producing the the book I am sharing below:

Laszlo Polgar's Chess Book

And this is the National Geographic video of Susan Polgar, one of Lazslo's daughters:

Rip Van Winkle Classic Video

Searching the net for my daughter's literature class homework, I found this classic "No-Talkies" which reminds me so much of The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin films.

Video presentations help so much in the understanding of any concept and ideas already read and lectured in the classroom. I say it's the way to go to reach the students of today. Characters from the book come alive with settings as real as the blue skies above.

Teachers go techie!

Basic Rook Checkmates

I spent a good 3 hours of chess lessons with my sons Freedom and Miguel. I was surprised at the two for recognizing and matching the chess diagrams from the book Simple Checkmates by A.J. Gillam. Our impromptu session started when Freedom complained that I never play chess with them. I said you have to learn how to play it before I play with them and next thing I knew we were setting up pieces on the board.

We started with the basic King and Queen checkmates until we reached the basic rook checkmates. Here are some of the diagrams I remember since I was more of an observer than a lecturer specially when they were collaborating on the following steps I gave them:

1st         Look at the diagram
2nd       Get the pieces asked by the diagram
3rd        Set-up the position
4th        Answer the question "Is it checkmate or not?"

From a special needs teacher with so much interest in the learning process and how humans grasp ideas, I knew I had to "learn" my kids jargon to learning which can be very different for the two of them. I also had to make sure that our goal as a group was more of bonding moments than chess moments.

Since I knew exactly what they already know and what they can learn at the moment, I figured the first few pages of A.J. Gillam's book is the right kind of chess for the right kind of learners.

Basic Rook Checkmates

In between we would exchange stories about BenTen, their favorite cartoon program. If there's excitement I am feeling over this development, it must be coming from the fact that if they really get hooked on this, we will be spending a lot of  time together for the next 20 years or so and be making beautiful memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

Fatherhood is the most important job a man can ever have!

Charice Pempengco Joins Glee

You heard it right, International Singer Charice Pempengco will be joining Glee next season and Rachel Berry got serious competition. The world has to thank "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "The Ophra Winfrey Show" for bringing out Charice in the international stardom while Charice has to thank FalseVoice of YouTube for uploading a video of the international singing sensation in when she was only 16 years old.

Here is Charice at the age of 9 in one of the many TV Singing contests she has joined and won:

Frank McAveety's Remarks

Here is another White scum littering the universe:

That Scottish white boy named Frank McAveety sees Filipinas, or women in general as someone that gives her heat. What's worse is that she was referring to a schoolgirl:

Don't you have a daughter Frank McAveety?

Thankfully we have read much of the results of the recent 11th ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships held at the Subic Freeport in Olongapo City thru the Chess Windows blog. Chessbase has more than a page full of photo and video reports courtesy of GM Robert Fontaine/Europe Echecs.

Winner-take-all Game 7 Today

Words of wisdom coming out from the the two best coaches of 2010 NBA Season regarding the Finals and life as well:

Zen Master and basketball coach Guru Phil Jackson of LA Lakers says :

"It's basketball and it's still a game and you have to go through the same execution things. You may be moving at a faster rate, you may be playing at a quicker elevation, spirit, et cetera. But if you're not going to be able to do the most basic things, if you come out of your skin things are going to happen awry," he said. "They're not going to go right for you. So you have to stay in character. Even though it's not just a game, it's a different type of a game, but it's something that you have to be able to confront and hold your composure in."

Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics said:

"You can never take for granted a season, a game, and especially a game seven of a finals. You never know if and when you're going to be back in that position. And so when you get in that position, you want to take advantage of it. I've always thought game seven is the ultimate player game. It's the game that all the things you've worked on all year, you have to do it and execute it and trust and play. You know, there's going to come a time maybe where a timeout is important and an adjustment may be important. And Chuck Daly always said it's the make-miss game. It comes down to makes and misses. And on the misses make sure they don't get another opportunity to have a make, and that's what they come down to."

Fischer's Body to be Exhumed

Let me do another word play here instead of the boring rigid semantics the English language:

Robert "Bobby" Fischer, 1972 World Chess Champion-Left behind $2 M estate, died at the age of 64
2 American nephews, 1 Japanese girlfriend-In the Philippines, Jinky and Marilyn Young-With photos together, and proof of money transfer
Iceland Supreme Court Approved, who will have the coffee to brew? Japanese, Americans or Filipinos, who knows?

Check out Telegraph.co.uk for the Bobby Fischer story. Chessbase has a very comprehensive compilation of the story: Chessbase Related Reports on World Chess Champion Robert "Bobby" Fischer.

Repeat Celtics Championship

We want Celtics to win this year's NBA Finals and I got this YouTube video which shows the Big Three domination of the Kobe-led Lakers team:

So again we say: Go Celtics, go, go, go!

Game 7 for NBA Finals 2010

With Kobe Bryant and his gang makes sure there is game 7 for the NBA Finals 2010!

I have never liked Kobe's winning attitude and his losing tantrums. I'd rather see Celtics win their 18th NBA Championship than Lakers get their 16th if Kobe will be part of this team.

Go Celtics! Go Oldies and forget about the goldies!

Chess is Fun

Since I used the new blogger template design, I have had to restructure and fix much of our labels, videos and photos to fit to the right dimensions of our blog. In between each tasks I can't help but play lightning games at chess.com and look for teaching materials available for free online.

Chess is Fun by Jon Edwards is one good site!

Head over to Amiel del Rosario's chess blog The Closet Grandmaster and you'll find his latest post Animatronic Chess Set. I immediately looked into the related links of the video and thought of showing this:

Now that's fun!

Jovit Wins RP's Got Talent

Cheers to Jovit Baldivino for winning the 1st Pilipinas Got Talent!!!

Here's what he has planned for his PhP 2.M earnings:

"Bibili po ako ng lupa kasi naninirikan lang kami. Papaaralin ko ang mga kapatid ko, [at] matutulungan ko na ang magulang ko,"

The term "naninirikan" is something new to my hearing but and Jovit made it very meaningful!

Congratulations!

The Brown Man's New Look

I found a new design for the first time here at The Brown Man Diary and I love it. I ma having second thought on re-posting the videos from my previous posts since they were set on the previous template settings but this would mean time and more time to undo everything.

Since I have scored 2 consultancy gigs for special education here in Cavite, plus my numerous tutorials around Paranaque, speaking engagements centering on educating the special needs, the developing mind and parenting issues. Not to mention my writing gigs here and there and of course my newly found sweat-out-work-out, touch football!

So what have I been up to lately?

I went back back to guitar playing for Sunday's Holy Eucharistic celebration at the Miraculous Medal Chapel of Southern City, Imus Cavite.

Another earthquake and this time it happened to our neighboring country on the north, Japan. Addition to our Earhtquake Chronicles again and not to mention the Guatemala Sinkhole which conspiracy theorists have a lot of opinions of.

Anyways, I love our new look!

P.S.

I think all posts I have made with Chess Viewer De Luxe were corrupted, I'll have to email the people behind this template and the viewer.

Who would not know Noel Cabangon's Kanlungan and now his Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko? Enjoy the videos below:

NBS Chess Tourney Today

Today is the staging of the fourth of a series of chess tournament sponsored by the National Bookstore. Details below I lifted from chess.com:

THE NATIONAL BOOK STORE FIRST MOVE CHESS TOURNAMENT SERIES

This tournament is aimed at our younger players, 15 and below. It is meant to give the youngest of our players a chance to play chess and win prizes and hopefully ignite the passion for chess in their hearts.

Q: Why is it called a chess tournament series?
A: National Book Store plans to sponsor a tournament on the first Saturday of every month starting March.

Q: When and where will the first tournament be held?
A: The first tournament will be held at Robinson's Galleria, QC on the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue. We will be at the Bestsellers Book Store(4th Floor).Tournament date is Saturday, April 10. Check in for pre registered players will be from 10 am to 12 noon. First round starts at 1 pm.

Q: Who can play?
A: All non-titled players aged 15 years old and under at the date of the tournament may play in the tournament. We will have two divisions: 15 and Under and an 11 and Under.

Q: What is the time control and how many rounds?
A: Five rounds Swiss System, G/30 or Game in 30 minutes.

Q: What are the prizes?
A: There will be trophies awarded to the top 3 finishers of each division. Additionally, medals will be awarded for 4th to 10th place in the two divisions. We will also be awarding a medal for the Top Under 8 player and the Top Female Player.

Q: Trophies and medals?? Why not cash?
A: National Book Store feels that awarding cash prizes takes away from the spirit of the tournament. This is supposed to be a tournament to develop the skills of our younger players. It also allows an entry point for new players into the world of tournament play. We also don't want strong developed players to see this as an opportunity to make money. This tournament is for fun, not money.

Q: Is there an entry fee?
A: Yes there is an entry fee of P200 per player

Q: Sounds great! How do I join?
A: Fill out a registration form and pay the entry fee at any BDO branch by depositing the money into the account of the tournament director. Make sure to bring the deposit slip which is your proof of payment and proof of age (birth certificate, passport...xerox ok) on the day of the tournament.

You must register in advance for this tournament.

THERE ARE ONLY 60 SEATS AVAILABLE.

If you choose to register on the day itself, it will only be done on a space available basis. If no more space...sorry, you will have to wait for the following tournament.

Q: Where do I get a registration form? How do I pay the entry fee at BDO?
A: To get a registration form, text your email address to the tournament director, Mr. John Sy, at 0917-833-3825. He will send you a form. Fill that form out using Word and email it back. Or if you prefer, print out the registration form and fax to him at 723-2298. You may also hand in your registration form to Mr. Alex Dinoy, Mr. Sy's co-organizer.

To pay at BDO, deposit the P200 to John Sy Account no. 1550139302.

Q: Can I register on the day of the tournament?
A: I strongly discourage you from doing that. Registering in advance assures you a spot in the tournament. Depending on whether or not we still have space on tournament day, we may or may NOT allow tournament date registration. REGISTERING IN ADVANCE IS THE BEST THING TO DO.

Q: What if I have more questions?
A: You may text Mr. John Sy 0917-833-3825 or Mr. Alex Dinoy 0922-828-8510

I sent my four chess players for today's event and we will find out how they fare against the other players in awhile.

Endings are Beginnings

Three more days and I'm officially free from having to wake up at four in the morning and drag my feet to work. Three more days and I know it'll be a very different morning knowing that I'll be leaving the workplace I've been with for the past five years. Three days from now and it's a goodbye to the place and people I've been with for the last five years.

Although much of my batch mates have left before me and are now in (work) places far better than what we used to have, the relationships we have made will forever be with us. It's a drag but it's not a difficult drag though. Many times I've wanted to break free and now it's here I know better that emotional investments are there because it makes us better persons.

The gift of life is something we all must treasure and everything that comes with it. Good times and bad times, sad moments and cheerful ones balances the life in us and around us. We have mistakes and we have achievements and these make us a better person. After every rain comes the sun this cycle provides us the chance to appreciate both water and heat.

It was almost the same time last year when I was in a situation where I had to make a choice between staying in Morocco or going home for good here in the Philippines. I chose to go back and be with my family and go back to my work. It was also the same time when I discovered Kelly Clarkson's song Breakaway which I really liked.

Endings truly are beginnings and I can say that I'm not leaving with a heavy heart. I gotta to know people who are good, bad and those who doesn't really know what's good or bad.

Someday everything will make sense!
