New FIDE Website for Kids

FIDE is serious at getting the entire population of the planet to play chess and they are starting with the younger generation. The Chess in Schools Commission and FIDE Trainer's Commission have been working on this and they came up with a very original idea -- a chess website with resources for everyone.

The membership has two options, premium and free registration. If you've got dough, you get the sweets but if your out of dough, forget it. Might as well go and look for the resources somewhere else which of course has the same free and premium offerings.

Chessbase run an article about this and it got me asking myself "What's the difference?"

And on that note, I think the recent NCFP Advisory "sounded and worded" almost similar to the advisory given by FIDE.  Hmmm!?

I think FIDE is five years late in the game. While Chessbase, FICS, ICC and other online chess resources have established their presence in the business, they were too busy figuring out a way to unify the chess world.

Will this takeoff and dominate the field in two to three years, I don't know. FIDE must be smart enough to know that country federations like the one we have in the Philippines are run in a "backyard" sense. From poor communication system to poor planning and definitely lack of vision for the chess populace.

Maybe its just the Philippines and our people, maybe disciplined federations will make it with the help of FIDE.

Whatever happened to the National Chess Academy? Whatever happened to the DEPED-NCFP collaboration? Did it start and end with the signing of Memorandum of Agreement?

Maybe someday NCFP will finally make it right, someday DEPED will light the way. Or maybe someday me, my family and my love for the game of chess will be in another place enjoying the right kind of governance from the government.

Equal Rights, Equal Oppurtunities

RP's Chess Federation Advisory

Announcement from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines:

“We are one family”

There is only one chess federation recognized by the Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) here in the country and that is the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

In line with this, we encourage all chess enthusiasts to become member and support the programs of the local chess governing body.

Beginning 2012, all local and international chess tournaments in the country should be sanctioned by the NCFP.

This can only be done with the support of local chess communities.

The federation always encourages interaction between and among all chess stakeholders to form one cohesive unit that is congruent with the FIDE motto:”We are one family.”

There are 64 squares, 32 pieces, and billions of possibilities in the game and they all happen over ONE chessboard.

In this connection, organizing and playing in a tournament not sanctioned by the federation will be considered a violation that has a corresponding penalty.

All NCFP members, especially the national and titled players, are prohibited to join all tournaments in the country not sanctioned by the federation and to compete in International events or tournaments without prior clearance, approval and coordination.

The federation reserves the right to penalize the erring players.

A warning will be issued on the first offense, but a repeat of similar violation may ultimately lead into a ban or prohibition from joining all tournaments sanctioned by the federation.

National players will lose their slot on the Philippine team right away if found guilty of committing the aforementioned offense and lose the right to officially represent the country in all international tournaments.
With the federation overseeing all tournaments here in the Philippines, the players will no longer worry about non-guaranteed prizes, biased officiating, and unfair or uneven playing field.

The federation will have a reliable and updated local rating to ensure that the players, especially in non-master tournaments, are playing on an even field.

Aside from determining the strength of the competition, the local rating aims to give the players a motivation to perform well and set higher goals.

Sumilie Wins 1st WCC Blitz Chess

Wesley Chess Cafe had its first ever Blitz Chess Tournament last January 21, 2012 and Kenneth Ryan Sumilie of Bacoor won in the finals against Samuel Senador.

Here is our email from the brains behind the Cafe', Morpheus aka Sugardom:
"25 chess players of all ages participated. We have turned away some guys who came in late. The competition was intense. There were several strong players, like coaches. The format was knock-out 2 games. Time control 5/3 with armageddon in case of tie-break. In the finals, we have one named Samuel Senador who is a brother of IM Emmanuel Senador vs Kenneth Ryan Sumilie, an unrated player. Kenneth Ryan won the first Wesley Chess Cafe tournament and went home 2,500 pesos richer."
Congratulations to everyone for making this historic event a success!

I went there last night and played six games. The first two were eggs for me against Morpheus and then I won 3 against a nice fellow from Anabu, Imus. Of course I brought my two boys, Freedom and Miguel and because they were so bored waiting for me after feasting on their sandwiches, they played. Nice place indeed to bring your kids and have some chess.

Why not bring your family for a cup of coffee and an unlimited game of chess? Let us support the joint and maintain the place by playing chess at the Cafe'.

To end this post, Wesley Chess Cafe' will have another tournament on January 28, 2012, Saturday. Tournament starts at 1 in the afternoon. Time control is 10 minutes and it will be a 5 Round Swiss System. Don't be late because organizers are strict with latecomers. Registration fee is Php 100.00 or 130.00 if you want your registration with coffee.

Register now at the bar of Wesley Chess Cafe', 4th floor of Robinson's Place Imus or call or send an SMS to 09228984337 or 09237224280.

Diwa De Leon's Dialogues

In this day and age when electronic media has taken over the traditions of humanity, it a reprieve to know that there are people working towards the preservation of our culture and tradition. Diwa de Leon is one of those rare breed who chose to promote and fight for the Filipino Culture.

Recently, he released his first ever solo album called Memories on Two Strings. It has 25 songs featuring his latest love affair with the Hegalong, an ethnic stringed musical instrument that Joey Ayala is known to use in concerts and studio recording.

I first saw Diwa during my college days when he and his band called Makiling Ensemble would play in pocket concerts promoting cultural activism.  I wonder what's the latest from Makiling but I'm happy that Diwa has launched this one, for the country and the whole world.

Incidentally, Diwa has a strong following for his YouTube Chanel and the Hegalong Project is one of the reasons why:

A Draw with a Rook and Pawn Ending

Here is a rare 5g I played over on Chesscube. With all the load I have for my teaching, coaching and personal life, chess and blogging has taken a backseat. So here it is, a draw with the white pieces for me. I liked the fact that I was able to separate his black King from his solitary center pawn on my 52nd move which gave me the window to draw the game.

Watch the game below:

RIP NM Mirabeau Maga

Rest in Peace to Philippine National Master Mirabeau Maga. He died last December 26, 2011 at the age of 59. The Davao City native was a two-time Olympian and a former MILO Checkmate instructor died of a cardiac arrest at about 8 a.m. at the East Avenue Medical Center.

On February 4, 2012 @ 1 in the afternoon, Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Wesley So will be giving a simultaneous exhibition at the MERALCO Chess Club. Entry fee is Php 500.00 and proceeds of the event will go to the family of NM Maga.

For those of you who doesn't know who NM Maga is, here are some links you can visit:

But of course, Mr. Bobby Ang's ever reliable historical expertise on Philippine Chess is simply amazing. After I read his column yesterday at Business World Online, I knew exactly how much NM Maga has given to Philippine Chess. A chess master like Maga deserves an obituary like this from the master chess journo like Ang:
Mirabeau Maga 1959-2011
By Bobby Ang
Champion and two-time Olympian Mirabeau “Boy” Maga passed away on the day after Christmas, 26 December 2011.
He was for a long time among the top players in the country. I remember during the ’70s “Boy” was always contending for the country’s Junior Championship -- his rivals were Edmund Pascual (who quit chess to pursue his medical practice), Remigio Ferido, Antonio Elinon, Frederic Tumanon, Ramir Panes, Adrian Pacis and some more whose names I can’t remember.
He shared the 1986 national championship with the late IM Ruben Rodriguez and later qualified for that year’s Olympiad in Dubai. On board 3 he scored 1 win 4 draws and 3 losses. It is a pity that his peak years coincided with one of the most controversial moments in Philippines chess.
1987 Philippine Championship Manila
1-2. GM Eugene Torre, Rogelio Antonio, Jr., 9.5/13
3. Mirabeau Maga, 9.0/13
4-5. Petronio Roca, IM Rico Mascariñas, 8.5/13
6. Eric Gloria, 8.0/13
7. Ronald Cusi, 7.5/13
8. IM Ruben Rodriguez, 6.5/13
9-10. IM Andronico Yap, Ponciano Badilles, 5.5/13
11. Peter Tidoy, 4.5/13
12-13. Erwin Carag, Alan Sasot, 3.0/13
14. Vince Alaan, 2.5/13
This started out as a very exciting national championship. Eugene Torre, who had hitherto never been seriously challenged for the title, fell in a shock loss to Roca in an early round and had to struggle to catch up. In the meantime Joey Antonio, at that time still untitled, Roca and Maga set a torrid pace to lead the pack in the early to middle rounds.
The big hullaballoo was in the 11th round -- Torre was playing Eric Gloria in a tight game and was outraged when he saw his two rivals, Maga and Petronio Roca, beat their opponents Allan Sasot and Vince Alaan, respectively, inside of 90 minutes. Crying “game-fixing” Eugene stormed out of the jampacked playing hall. The organizers prevailed upon him to resume his match against Gloria (which he won) and promised to investigate.
Following a three-day deliberation by members of the Philippine Chess Federation (PCF) appeals committee, during which time none of the 4 players under investigation were summoned to give their side, PCF President Art Borjal meted out one-year suspensions in any PCF-sanctioned tournament. The victories of Maga and Roca, who finished third and fourth, were also nullified. On top of this Maga and Roca were also disqualified from the Philippine team which was to compete in the Thessaloniki Olympiad in 1988.
Eugene himself was aghast at the harsh penalties and appealed directly to Borjal just to give them a reprimand instead, but Borjal would not budge.
The consequences of this action was to seriously affect Philippine chess. Maga and Roca, both of whom were chess professionals, after their brilliant showing in the championship, were disenfranchised from chess at the top of their form and could not earn a decent living for one year. Vince Alaan was psychologically affected by all this and saw a promising career nipped at the bud.
Haven’t heard about Vince Alaan? He learned chess at the age of 15 in 1985 and by late that year was already a finalist in the Philippine Junior Championship. The following year he won that tournament and gained the FIDE Master title by winning the Asian Under-16 Championship. And now in his first try to win the Philippine title he has been branded a cheat.
Later in the year Alaan led Adamson (Alaan, Dennis Gutierrez, Chris Palma) to the National UAAP title by defeating Southwestern University (IM Enrico Sevillano, Barlo Nadera, Ariel Ranile) with Alaan delivering the full point against Sevillano. SWU filed a protest questioning the eligibility of FM Alaan to play considering that he was still under the one-year suspension by the PCF. This protest was upheld and all games of FM Alaan were forfeited thereby giving the champion’s trophy to SWU.
After this Alaan was a broken player.
Back to Maga.
Five years later Maga again represented the country in the 1992 Manila Olympiad (won 4, drew 5, lost 2). I remember this game very clearly -- the Olympiad was held in the PICC and I had to sneak out of the office to watch the games. Maga vs. Damaso (one of the top Portuguese players) was an exciting affair. At first we thought Maga “had” Damaso, but Rui found a nice tactical shot which equalized. He relaxed too soon, though, and could not survive his opponent’s second wind.

In the Philippines when you speak of the Sveshnikov Variation the name most associated with it is GM Joseph Sanchez. However, even before the “Atakador from Cebu” took it up there was Maga.
6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Bxf6
After an explosion of interest in the Sveshnikov the current antidote goes 9.Nd5 Be7 10.Bxf6 Bxf6 11.c4, but that has to be taken up in a separate column!
9...gxf6 10.Nd5 Bg7
This is known as the Novosibirsk Variation. Boy prefers it to 10...f5 (commonly known as the Cheliabinsk Variation), which is actually more popular, because he didn’t want to worry about miscellaneous piece sacrifices on b5.
11.c3 0 -- 0
Ivanchuk has shown us how to meet 11...Ne7 : 12.Nc2! f5 13.Nxe7 Qxe7 14.exf5 Bb7 (14...Bxf5??
15.Qf3 attacking a8 and f5) 15.Ne3 0 -- 0 16.Be2 Kh8 17.a4! b4 18.0 -- 0 e4 19.cxb4 Bxb2 20.Rb1 Be5 21.Bc4! White’s strongpoint on d5 will allow him to control both sides of the board. Ivanchuk,V (2786)-Radjabov,T (2751) Cap d’Agde (rapid) 2008 1 -- 0 33.
12.Nc2 f5 13.exf5 Bxf5 14.Be2
The main line is 14.Nce3 but there is nothing wrong with the text move -- White simply wants to finish his development and castle.
14...Be6
Getting the bishop out of the way so that he can push his f-pawn.
15.0 -- 0 f5 16.a4 bxa4 17.Rxa4 a5
White will dominate the queenside, but he must be wary of Black’s f-pawn which might advance all the way to f3.
18.Bc4
White is now threatening moves such as Ndb4 or Nc7 taking advantage of the potential check down the a2 -- g8 diagonal, so Maga understandably takes his king out of the diagonal right away.
18...Kh8 19.Qh5?!
Rui Damaso is a very aggressive player, but the queen expedition merely results in it being pushed back with gain of time for Black. Perhaps better is 19.Nf4 Bxc4 20.Rxc4 Qd7 21.Ne6! Qxe6 22.Rxc6 Black will have his hands full trying not to lose a pawn.
19...Bf7 20.Qh3 Rb8 21.b3 f4 22.Ne1 Bg8 23.Nf3 Rb7 24.Nh4
Just in case Black overlooks the threat of Ng6 checkmate.
24...Qg5 25.Nf3 Qg6 26.Qh4 Rf5
Now White suddenly realizes that he is in danger of losing his queen to...Rh5.
27.h3 Be6
Renewing the threat of...Rh5.
28.Re1 Bh6!
Damaso’s last move was a trap. If 28...Rh5? 29.Nxf4! exf4 (29...Rxh4 30.Nxg6+ hxg6 31.Nxh4 loses)
30.Rxe6 and Black’s position is badly coordinated.
29.Qg4 Qe8?
[29...Rg5! 30.Nxf4 Rxg4 31.Nxg6+ Rxg6 wins a piece]
30.Nxf4 Bxf4 31.Bxe6
I was watching this game as it was being played. Damaso smashed this move hard on the board -- Boy Maga overlooked that 31...Qxe6 is met by 32.Rxf4! Anyway, all is not lost...
31...Rf6 32.Bf5 Qf8 33.Bd3 Rg7 34.Qh5 Qg8 35.Kf1
[35.g3 Rh6 36.Qf5 Rxg3+ 37.fxg3 Qxg3+ 38.Kf1 Qxf3+ 39.Kg1 Rg6+ wins]
35...Ne7 36.Bc4 d5 37.Bb5 e4 38.Nd4 Rxg2 39.Qe8 Rf8 40.Qxe7 Bd6! 41.Qxf8
[41.Qxd6 Rfxf2#]
41...Bxf8 42.Rxa5 Rh2 43.Ke2 Qg3 44.Kd2 Qxf2+ 45.Re2 Qf4+ 46.Kc2 Rh1 47.b4 Qc1+ 48.Kb3 Rxh3 49.Rc2 Qb1+ 50.Rb2 Qd1+ 51.Ka2 Rxc3 52.Ne6 Rc1 53.Rf2 Ra1+ 54.Kb2 Rb1+ 0 -- 1
Boy Maga could have qualified a third time for the Olympiad. He looked like a shoo-in for a berth for the 2006 Turin Olympiad until a penultimate round trap in the qualifying tournament by Oliver Dimakiling swindled him out of a sure win in time trouble. Boy recovered by beating prodigy Wesley So in the last round, which created a five-man playoff for the remaining berth. Wesley So won the playoff though, and this was to be Maga’s last hurrah.
Almost everyone else called him “Maging,” but he preferred “Boy” and he will always be “Boy” to me. May he rest in peace.

Chess players with a passion for teaching and coaching, here's a chance to teach chess and be paid for it. This one will definitely be a good-paying job for chess coaches and trainers. An announcement I found at the FIDE Trainers Commission Website:

TOFIL Awards 2011

What is the TOFIL Awards all about?

The move to institutionalize public recognition of men and women over 41 years of age, whose achievement in their field of endeavors are worthy of emulation was conceived and implemented by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Philippines in 1988.

JCI Senate Philippines and Insular Life made it a point to give due recognition to these people.

Awardees went home with a TOFIL Trophy designed and executed by National Artist Napoleon Abueva.. The 27-inch trophy of irregular polygonal form symbolizes the many sidedness of human endeavor, and its gradual narrowing top represents the pinnacle of achievement.

The five winners of TOFIL Awards 2011:

Dr. Jesus Estanislao
Dr. Ramon Nery for Health and Medicine

Quick Checkmates at the Cube

Here are two games from my hour-long bullet games which I played at ChessCube. These were surprisingly quick ones which I enjoyed watching over and over again.

 And here is another one:

Opening Ceremony of Wesley Chess Cafe'

This post a tad late but it's here anyways. The opening ceremony of newly-opened Wesley Chess Cafe' happened last Saturday, January 7, 2012 at four-thirty in the afternoon, fourth floor of Robinson's Place Imus Cavite.

Notable chess personalities graced the opening including GM Wesley So, NCFP President Prospero Pichay Jr and newly-crowned 14 and Under Singapore Chess Champion FM Paulo Bersamina. Here are some photos from the camera of Mrs. Sally Bersamina, mother of Philippine chess' future, Paulo.

Then Sunday afternoon I played at the joint.

For a very reasonable price, you get your brewed coffee and an hour of chess with whoever is there ready to play with you. Chess clocks were brand new and are digital. They had different chessboards but I requested for a Eureka set, the standard for the amateurs. I played against two opponents and manage to lose only once with a Rook handicap.

This chess cafe offers you a decent and safe place to enjoy the game with a friend or with your family. Its the perfect time for chess aficionados to support projects like this one, promotes the game, sustains the project and advertises the game.

Congratulations to FM Paulo Bersamina for winning the championship in Singapore and to the owners/operators of Wesley Chess Cafe!

Philippine Holidays for Year 2012

After all the celebrations, family reunions and gift-givings, the new year has unfolded and we now face the task of furthering our relationship with God, family members, loved ones and friends. This is also the best time to mend broken ties and be at peace with yourself and your foes.

With all the challenges we all will be facing for the year 2012, let us find the time to rest and reflect. The approved holidays for the year is shown below, also known as the Proclamation Number 295:

Wesley Chess Cafe

An ad I saw on the fourth floor of The Robinson's Place-Imus:

Wesley Chess Cafe'

To Open

January 7, 2012

4:30 P.M.

It would be interesting to see how this Cafe' will fare business-wise. In this day and age when the high cost of fuel raises every commodity's prices in the market, will there be a willing bloke to spend on chess and  coffee?

I had a very nice discussion with my wife about the pros and cons of running a business with chess as the main source of income.

70% of Filipinos are jobless and playing chess will take their time away from any opportunity to find the job that will put food on the table and pay the rent for their shelter. On top of these socio-economic factors, we also have to consider the overhead expenses of running a chess club in the guise of a coffee shop. Rental fees for the chessboard and chess clocks, space fee and of course the income called "pusta" or bet for the player.

With all the online chess sites available for free like ChessCube and Free Internet Chess Server, is there really a need for a chess cafe'?

Is GM Wesley So behind this business?

If not, did he allow the Cafe owner to use his name? But then, Wesley could just anybody. Wesley Snipes, Wesley Sharma, Wesley de Guzman, Wesley Francisco and Wesley Sosa.  I remember someone having said the line "No one can own words, you cannot tell me what to say and what not to say. You don't tell me which words I can and cannot use."

Maybe a baranggay resident is behind this business venture or a big fan of Wesley hoping to cash in on the already fading popularity of chess in the Philippines.

I wish this Cafe will make it through. No matter what, this is a good move for the game. Good luck!

If you are in Imus on the seventh of January, do drop by and play a couple of games at the Cafe', chess and coffee is a good combination for the hyperactive mind.

The Year 2012

Much has been written and discussed about the year 2012. Doomsday prophets and soothsayers have a thing or two to say about the year as much as Year 2000 or more popularly known as Y2K. Before, it was Y2K that the whole world fantasized about. Now it is the year 2012 and all the environmental hazards we humans are facing are the products of our own making --human civilization.

Here are some web resources you guys might want to check. A piece of advice, conspiracy theorists are feasting on these and you might need plenty of common sense and a lot of faith in whatever you believe in. As for me, my faith in the Lord our God i the only thing that keeps me alive.

With all the theories available for us to read, the only think that really matters is the safety and survival of the human race. Will the year 2012 be the last year of the world as we know it?
