Round 7 of 1st Asian Club Cup

Hello there!

Woke up today and realized I had to check the round four results of the currently running 1st Asian Club Cup and found out that I have missed most of the rounds. Final round game is scheduled today and our very own all-GM Philippine Team will have to win over their rivals from China to land second place behind GM Sergei Karjakin's UAE Team.

Let's get on with the details:

In round 4, it was Al Ain Chess Club A of UAE against Tagaytay Chess Club of the Philippines. Fans were excited about this match as we saw GM Wesley So played with black pieces against another one of the youngest ever grandmaster, GM Karjakin. The game was a draw, another milestone for the Bacoor Wonderboy. Remember the match between GM Shirov and GM So in the Olympiads? draw. This is a good preview for us chess fans as we enter the year 2009, GM Wesley So's rating will further up the super-GM status. Also in round four, GM's Laylo, Paragua and Gomez lost against their opponents, thus losing our hold on top post.

In round 5, we played and won against Club India with a score of 1.5 - 2.5. Board one was a draw, IM Laxman vs GM So, board 2 IM Sengupta Deep vs GM Gomez John Paul, 1 - 0, a lose for Philippines' latest GM addition. On board 3 and 4, GM's Paragua and Laylo won over IM' Karthikeyan and Prathamesh respectively.

In round 6, Tagaytay Chess Club won 3.5 - .5 against Club Intchess of Singapore. Filipino and former Bacoor-based IM Ino Sadorra played for the club from Singapore on board 2, losing to GM JP Gomez. GM's So and Laylo won on their respective assignements while GM Paragua o board 3 drew with FM Peter Long.

Last Hoorah for 2008

As we almost near the end of 2008, we are seeing a last hoorah for the year for Team Philippines playing in the 1st Asian Club Cup. Going into the 4th round, our young, all-GM team maintains an unblemished 6 Match points to place 1st on the standings.

GM's Wesley, Mark, John Paul and Darwin are in good form and hopefully maintain this until the end. Some say this line up is a lot stronger than what our country had for the Olympiad. Some even say we could have landed higher on the standings if we had this team for the Olympiad. I don't agree with this coz hey, we had a national qualifying and the players in the names of Villamayor, Gonzales qualified fair and square. Also, please stop crying over it.

Back in January 2008, our present NCFP president, former congressman Pichay jr. gave a forecast about producing 5 grandmasters this year. We almost produced an egg this year, thanks for the fine showing of John Paul Gomez, our newly-minted grandmaster. I was lucky enough to have had a chit-chat with him 2 a month before the Olympiad as he helped out his girlfriend who was promoting environmentally helpful projects in our school, Mahatma Gandhi International School. All he had to say was hopefully he plays well in the Olympiad. He did and he got his reward, a GM title.

Going back to the Asian Club Cup, everybody's awaiting for the match between GM Wesley So and GM Sergei Karjakin, two prodigies playing board 1 for their teams. Remember Wesley's drawn game with Gm Shirov in the Olympiads? Well, we can only be hopeful if ever the two prods' meet in this tourney.

In the local shores, not much chess news as we all take a long holiday break. Hope all is well and yes, my dad's out of the hospital, thanks for all the prayers.

Till then!

GM Antonio These Days

Hey there!

National Master and freelance newspaper correspondent Marlon Bernardino has for the past few weeks sent us articles and photos of GM Joey Antonio. Although year 2008 will be remembered as the year when he and GM Torre opted out of the national qualifying for the Dresden Olympic team, these days he made news by winning tourneys in the USA. I really believe our performance in the 2008 Olympiad would have been different if only we had the preparation done together and yes, GM's Torre and Antonio included in the team via the qualifying.

That's water under the bridge now. Let me link you once again to those articles about GM Rogelio Antonio's recent shiny moments: Joey in North American Open, Joey Leads NA Open, 10th Annual Joseph Ileto Memorial Open Chess Championships.

And in the local news from Mindanao, Chadric Team Wins Tatlohan Chess. Also, Imus Chess Association INC holds a tourney tomorrow at Brggy. Alapan. Mr. Gerry Bustamante spearheads the organizing committee with support from other local chess players.

More online chess stories: Indonesia gets their first WGM in the name of Irene Kharisma Sukandar. Here's the story. Chess Mentality by billwall of chess.com and It's our move post by Chess In Education.

By the way, my dad's exploratory surgery was a success last Thursday at the De La Salle University Medical Center, Dasmarinas, Cavite. Thanks to all your prayers!

Chess' the Season To Be Jolly?

Good day to all of you!

As you all probably have read in one of my posts, my dad's going thru a lot lately mainly because of his diagnosed colon cancer.

On Thursday, he will be undergoing an exploratory surgery which dad, will hopefully arrest the possibility of a spread of his sigmoid cancer. Prayers for my dad please!

Yes, it's the season of gift giving and most everyone is in the mood for shopping and shopping and more shopping. Please, do not forget the reason for the season.

One chess alert which caught my s the one coming from the southern province of Negros Occidental about a chess teacher serving 3 years in prison for a Estoppel. What is estoppel anyway? Read here to get the details.

And at chess.com, we found one good read bout the five schools of chess. ou may have concluded by now that I've totally forgotten my account details on that site, it's good know members of that community are active enough to keep the flame going.

Another community new to my mindedness is chesspub.com and I'd like you to read the forum thread called "how to manage chess information", maybe you will learn a lot from it like I did.

Don't forget to read the Ivanchuk Outrage on Dope Test too.

Before I end this rather "linky" post, check out the game below:

And here is the position that could trick and trim our heart and mind's desire for a "chess a day" motto:

Save the K but black will end up without her lady right?

The Bid Difference

There goes the knee jerk reaction again after the Olympiad... Try to compare the PinoyChess Portal posts here and what the Chess Federation of Zambia has accomplished so far here.

I don't know if during the time of President Florencio Campomanes, FIDE has donated clocks and chess sets for Philippine Chess Federation.

As a member of chess-loving community, we ought to know that preparation, training and yes, talent assures one of a good tournament performance, not just money... but as the band from down under Silverchair sings "You say money isn't everything, but wait till you live without!"

Chess and money, the big difference.
