Minsan may Isang Puta

May 1 is right around the corner and every anti-establishment organization in the Philippines in the thick of preparation for the big day. They are fighting for every known right a worker has ever known. Fighting for the poor and impoverished, injustice to workers and wage hike have become so ordinary among Filipinos. We even find them annoying at times and uncultured but the fact remains, we should be vigilant against the systemic oppression the government and private companies doing against us, the laborers.

If we will not do this, who will? If not us, who? Fight for your rights and fight till the end. Remember, revolution starts with knowing you are responsible with your own destiny. If every Filipino realizes this, then there's hope for our country. The pervasive culture of "kanya-kanya" which has caused so much anguish for us will vanish.

Let me share this Mike Portes article-essay-turned-into-a-movie called "Minsan may Isang Puta" but before that, I'd like you to read what Mike has to say about it:

“Minsan may Isang Puta” was originally published in April 30, 2004 @ Peyups.com. The 2007 version is a response to the apathy and complete disregard of our kababayans to the worsening plight of our country.
It’s been seven years since I wrote the article and at 2010, it is still finding it’s way to blog sites, fora, search engines and now on an Indie film. “Minsan may Isang Puta” has also been studied in high schools, universities and colleges for PolSci, Filipino and Theater 12 subjects.
“Minsan may Isang Puta” and all its entities have copyrights with the National Commission for Culture and Arts.
So here it is:

Nagkagusto at naakit.

May datung pa!

May nanghihinayang, namumuhi at naaawa.

Nag-aambisyon kami at nangangarap. Ayun, may mga anak ako na nasa Japan, Hong Kong, Saudi. Yung iba nag-US, Canada, Europe.

Tama man o mali.

May malasakit man, nahihilaw pa.

Cityhood for Bacoor and Imus

Congratulations!

After years of speculation and posturing, these two municipalities from the Province of Cavite are now cities. The Man in Malacanang has signed into law the bills converting these municipalities into cities after meeting the requirements for cityhood.

These two new cities have played a major role in my life. Bacoor is were my high school Alma Mater is and Imus have been my hometown for the last twenty-one years. I've seen these two cities during the nineties when the migration of Manilenos and other Metropolitans started to pick-up.

I literally saw how the major malls of both cities were put-up. SM Bacoor was built and is currently standing in front my my high school Alma Mater, Cavite School of St. Mark while the Robinson's Place Imus was built right next to where our subdivision is.

In fact, we call Robinson's Place Imus as the "Phase 3" of Southern City Subdivision. On the spot where the mall stands was where we used to fly kites, play kiddie softball and catch dragonfly, grasshoppers and snakes (we tried!).

I was born in Makati City but I feel at home here in Imus. Imus City, the land of progressive living with strong roots and ties from the past.

Holy Week 2012

The Lenten Season 2012 is at its peak this week and I've already set up the activities for the remaining days leading to Easter Sunday. Tomorrow, Holy Wednesday, I'll be doing the Visita Iglesia with my wife and our starting point will be the Imus Cathedral and we'll end in San Lorenzo Ruiz Church. We will try to visit and pray in fourteen churches and I will take the chance to take as much pictures as I can after each prayer and meditation.

The holy week is a good time to reflect ton our lives, loved ones, family members, friends, colleagues and activies, achievements, failures. This is also a perfect time to renew our relationships with God and Mother Earth. The holy week gives us this chance to be cleanse our minds and souls.

It has been a very successful and productive schoolyear for our children this year. Our eldest, Patricia, placed 5th in her SPED-Fast Learner Class over-all and she bagged the Leadership Award for her batch. This wouldn't be possible without Jesus and Mother Mary's guidance to our family. For Freedom, he is doing very well with the homeschooling and his piano lessons has given him the motivation to work on something he feels comfortable with. He found his niche! For Miguel, he won the Most Resourceful Student ahead of his batch and is raring to go through the homeschooling like his kuya Freedom. we were blessed last October 27 with another member of the Family, our daughter Fides Sophia. She pretty much takes the center stage and was welcomed by her siblings with open heart and curious minds. A totally blessed year for the whole family.

Here is a YouTube video that was uploaded by a former student who I have kept in touch with because I've taught her brother chess for a very long time now. Nicole has been studying piano for about eight years now and last April 1, Sunday, she decided to upload her piano performances on YouTube. Her YouTube Chanel is Pianoismylove47.

Almost everyone in her current school have requested a song for her to play on the piano and upload on YouTube. I've written my favorites and so far, she has agreed and uploaded some of the songs on my list. Here some of the videos:

The current Philippine President is a product of political machinery, mass media and uneducated citizenry. We all are celebrating the EDSA People Power Revolution today but we all know that the essence of the so-called EDSA revolution is gone and nowhere to be found.

Parokya ni Edgar in NZ

Chito Miranda and the gang in New Zealand. Parokya ni Edgar (PNE) gave us the classics like Buloy, Tatlong Araw and Silver Toes. PNE have gone from an unknown, unheard of high school band from San Juan to a world touring Pinoy band known for their crazy live concerts.

One caricature depicting PNE's mainman, Chito Miranda, was sent to me by Sheila of the Filipino Migrant News in New Zealand. In case your wondering why, I've been writing for them since November and so far, its been a smooth ride.

So here it is, Chito serenading New Zealand's top cow!

Thanks to Sheila!

Rizal's 115th Martyrdom Remembered

Remember when my Jose Rizal Exposed?

Today, most Filipinos remember the martyrdom of one of the major players in our nation's journey towards freedom from the Spaniards. The Spaniards main objective was to ruin and dominate the already intelligent civilization we had. From their abusive ways to the criminals sent in here, they found ways to rape the virgins of the land -- culturally, intellectually and yes, physically.

Thanks to Dr. Jose Rizal, the sins of the Spaniards were exposed through his works: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

The Filipinos should never forget!

Philippine Independence 2011

Got back from Palawan the other day and I didn't have much time to compile all the videos and photo our group took from our trip. Instead, today I went to the Aguinaldo Shrine with my family and seized the chance to loiter within the compound and inside the Shrine.

We arrived there a little after lunchtime and soon learned that President Noy Aquino was there in the morning. We were kinda surprised when we arrived at the gate closed because the Shrine is always open for visitors but today was a special day so we had to wait for awhile.

Today's celebration is the 113th anniversary of the proclamation of the Philippine Independence in case you want to know.

Some bits of a trivia: the raising of the Philippine Flag took place between four to five in the afternoon, Sunday. And yes, The Aguinaldo's during that time were well-off much like these days so it's no surprise it has always been the people in the higher echelon of society who gets to position to get into position.

Well thank you for the pseudo-independence of the Philippines, need I explain?

There are so many reasons why almost everyone say we as a country is not really free or independent. We are chained to the helplessness caused by corruption in our society and this caused the government administration since the 1960's to borrow money from international organizations.

Anyways, before we went to the Shrine we first celebrated the Holy Eucharist and here's one thing that will always remind people of their spirituality:

Visiting Palawan Philippines

In our previous post here, I told you guys that I am on vacation and that I'll be going to Palawan Island. The day has finally arrived to do that. I'll be flying to the Island in less than five hours with my friends and already I'm giddy!

Our blogging activity will be off for the next five days while I do the following:

  • Island hopping
  • Hill climbing
  • Photography
  • Booze
  • Sight-seeing
  • Reflecting
  • Sleeping
That's it for this post and I'd like to leave you with this game I played early this morning at ChessCube. My opponent resigned after I denied his offer of draw. Why would someone do that with a lot of time left for both of us? How should white continue here?

Work for Summer 2011

I'm about to end my first week of summer vacation today.

Yes you read it right, I am on vacation which ends by July 18 and so far so good. If your wandering, the school which I am in is following the Northern Hemisphere school calendar for the IB World Schools. While the local schools and people of my country busy as a bee in preparing for this Monday's back to school, here I am whiling away my time with my loving family.

There are so many ways to use one's vacation time wisely and it all depends on taste, awareness and preference. Most of my students are on a cruise, vacationing outside of the country and God knows they are scattered all over the globe and spending time with their video consoles and family. Some are diving off the shores of Palau and Palawan.

Truly it all hinges on ones taste, preference, awareness and let me add this one, finances.

Oh well! If you are like me which on a daily basis would rather sleep, pray and love, it would really help if you find an extra paying activity for this Summer of 2011.

As a teacher for the past eleven years and having worked as a storyteller for National Bookstore's Summer Reading Workshop, storyteller for The Children's Library of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, a play therapist, school-based occupational therapist, special needs education teacher, chess coach and university senior instructor, much of the network and "jobs" that attracts me and vice-versa would be in the academe.

So far I was informed by my mentor and colleague that we have been contracted to provide a series of workshop on special education to the teachers of a Paranaque-based Catholic school. I am somewhat excited to work with professional adults again as they partake in discussion that's mentally stimulating but totally grounded on real-life situations.

But before I start all these, I'll be flying to Palawan on the 7th and stay there until the 10th of June. It will be one exciting week for me together with the PE teachers in my school. My work for this summer can wait, Palawan Philippines they say is a lot better than Boracay or Mindoro. We will see.

Typhoons and rainstorms we don't need you next week, please cooperate!

Visita Iglesia Online

Holy Week 2011 here in the Philippines is in full swing with the highlight to happen in Pampanga later today with the reenactment of crucifixion. The Filipinos' varied ways of celebrating and sharing Jesus Christ's passion is seen through the different lenses of expert photographers.

Boracay beach is one hell you wouldn't want to be in during Lent where you meet and see everyone from work.

For those who couldn't afford to do their Visita Iglesia on foot, you can still do it online at Visita Iglesia Online courtesy of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Bacoor Chess Club

City of Bacoor in Cavite, the city that gave us GM Wesley So, IM Ino Sadorra and CM Vince Angelo Medina.

What else can you ask for?

Last night I stopped by and watched a few games in the playing area of Bacoor Chess Club. The play area is located within the vicinity of the intersection of Aguinaldo highway, Coastal Road and Daang Hari. Landmarks are easy to find try this: St Dominic Hospital, Talaba-Bacoor Police Station and Tropical Hut Hamburger.

Let me describe the place.

It's a makeshift play area and it fronts the dilapidated building that has a big advertising billboard on top of it. Chairs, tables, chess boards and clocks are supplied by the store owner and it is interesting to watch how the club members satisfy their addiction. The members convene every night at around 5 and from what I've heard last night, a pair had a record of 30 hours non-stop play.

Who runs the club? Heck I don't know.

One thing is for sure, they have players ready to play with anyone.

The only active chess club in the Province of Cavite is Bacoor Chess Club.

No politics, no geniuses, just chess!

Living and Working in Morocco

Somebody emailed me asking about Morocco. Let me list down some reminders and  concerns for you if ever you will accept the job offer they are giving you:

  • What kind of job are they offering you? Is it an institution who has contacted you or a private individual working for one of the very few rich families in Morocco?
  • What are they offering you? Just remember if they really want your services and that they have no one but you in mind, you can ask for the sky and they will try to give you at least one of the stars. That's a good deal!
  • Morocco is a friendly place for friendly guests.
  • Try to visit Ifrane, Marrakesh, Volubilis, Rabat, Casablanca and other ancient cities of Morocco. If possible, visit all the Mosques and other burial grounds of their Kings.
  • If you are a Filipino, email me in private and I will give you email addresses of the Filipinos living there.
  • If you are like me who wants to travel and see places where I am in, you have to learn basic Moroccan Arabic. If you learn this, taxi's and use if the train will be your second and third name.
  • Befriend locals and they will be your guide.
  • A point and shoot camera is better than nothing. But if you can bring your own DSLR the better.
  • If you like snow, better be in Ifrane around March and April.
  • Rabat, the country's political capital, but it looks like the Makati Business Center without the malls and the high rise buildings. It's clean, nice city roads and has a beautiful traffic system: NO TRAFFIC. Before I left Morocco, they were putting up tramps there.
  •  Casablanca is the country's economic capital. It looks like the Escolta side of the City of Manila. The same old buildings can be found there and the traffic going in the city from the Autoban is terrifically congested.
  • Their money is called Moroccan Dirhams. If you will not be given the working visa, you will have a hard time sending money (US dollars) overseas.
I lived in Ifrane and Meknes when I was in Morocco and I had the chance to see beautiful and ancient places there. It is still a backward country with 80 percent of the people not having access to education. Watch out for Islamic traditions, they observe and practice them.

Respect the people there and they will admire you for having an open mind about their culture.

That's all for now and do send me an update about your plans.

Good luck!

Tourism in the Province of Cavite

The Province of Cavite proudly calls itself Historic and rightly so! Let's check this one out:

Long known to be a picturesque province, Cavite is a land blessed with a galore of natural wonders, making it gleaming and a perfect place for a memorable eco-holiday. The province boasts some of its most superb mountains, cave and falls which can truly fascinate its numerous visitors. Natural wonders in Cavite are mostly found in the upland areas such as Tagaytay Ridge, Cabag Cave in Maragondon, Balite Falls in Amadeo, Malibiclibic Falls in General Aguinaldo-Magallanes border and Mts. Palay-Palay and Mataas na Gulod National Park in Ternate and Maragondon. Meanwhile, a number of historical and religious sites are also located in province, which have defined significant events and have illustrated human creativity and cultural traditions. Each site tells its own distinctive story. Some of these sites are sacred and some are commemorating battlefields. More importantly, all of these places have contributed a sense of time, identity, and place to our understanding of Cavite as a whole.
Tourism Nodal Points

As a premiere tourist destination where variety of attractions and entertainment facilities are available, Cavite’s four (4) cities and nineteen (19) municipalities are clustered into three tourism nodal points for the particular interests of visitors belonging to different market segments:

1. Tagaytay – Upland Area is famous for natural tourist attractions and is conducive for meditating, sight-seeing, picnicking, and other countryside activities

2. Ternate-Corregidor- Naic- Maragondon Area is popularly attractive because of the presence of world-class beach resorts complementing the area’s historical attractions

3. Kawit-Cavite City Area, Cavite’s focal point for the pieces of rich historical legacies the great Caviteño forefathers gave for the birth of Philippine Independence.
And the real reason for my post here is the announcement slash invitation I have from Cavite Provincial Board Tourism Inc.  :

Mangyan Culture Thrives

The Mangyan Cultural Exhibit is on at Mahatma Gandhi International School from March 8-12, 2010 and if you have the time, please visit us!

I have included the Mangyan Heritage Center Official Website on my sidebar just in case we have visitors interested to read more about our brothers from Mindoro. Our newsletter says it briefly and concisely:

"Mangyan is a collective name for eight highland tribes from Mindoro, who not only maintained their original cultural practices, but managed to preserve original writing. Scripts of two of the tribes are recognized as National Treasures, and inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Registers."
That's all for now but with this post I was introduced to more ideas regarding cultural activism that will influence and direct my future postings here.

Contrasts in Black and White

Here is one of the many photos I took with the camera I borrowed from my brother. I saw this boy wandering about from cottage to cottage and then would pick stones on the ground. He'll then play with the stones and be lost amidst the beauty and serenity of the place.

I am relearning to use Google's Picassa photo software and I'm glad they have the software available to everyone!

Saturday Household Symphony

I woke up nine in the morning and was greeted by my youngest "Pa why are you late to get up?" to which I replied "It's Saturday..." then went on to do my morning ritual. Still feeling the skin burns caused by my "marine surveying" the other day and muscle pains, I thought it would be another difficult weekend for a father of three active kids.

Right after my usual hygienic ritual, I heard my two boys about to erupt into childish petty quarrels which for the moment I didn't want to hear. So what I did, I took out my secret tools I call W.A.B. short for Weapons Against Boredom. It was early so I thought of using the "lighter ones"  in the names of Bugs Floor Puzzle and Building Blocks which I bought a couple of months ago.

Immediately life went on to become a peaceful morning!

After an hour I had them work on a DK Educational CD which allowed me to have more free time and at the same time provide my children the necessary intellectual stimulation on a Saturday morning. Two hours passed and lunchtime came.

Went by so fast, it's siesta time for my children and chess time for me. Lightning and bullets screams on my face and I just can't ignore these calls for fast, precise and quicky chess games.

Around three in the afternoon and we had our Rosary Prayer together with our neighbors. This time my wife couldn't join us because it's that time of the year when local school children are gearing up for their final exams and my wife teaches them privately. This means added income for the family!

Right after we said our final Amen's for the prayer, wife arrives and her choir members are arriving too one by one just in time for their four in the afternoon practice.

Saturday nights are Talentadong Pinoy and Midnight DJ nights. Our children loves watching our fellow Pinoys showing-off at times, extremely weird talents and feeling the goosebumps on their necks. I love Saturdays like this.

I still feel tired from yesterday's trip and I plan to sleep within the next hour. So off I go and head to dinning table. But before I go, I'd like to show you one tranquil scene from yesterday's trip to Anilao, Batangas:
