Scholastic Sports in Cavite

Hello everyone.

The Season of Christmas is right around the bend and we all know why. The nights are earlier, longer and colder. No need to run those AC's full blast and then wake up in the middle of the night just to have it switched off. Y'all better lay down those extra linens and put on extra clothes before going to bed to give you a fighting chance against freezing temperature at night.
And while the "bed" weather is getting colder, inter-scholastic sports in Cavite is on the rise and it's getting hotter every minute of the day.

PCU-Dasmarinas Football dominates City Meet 2019 by winning the grade school and high school divisions. For the grade school team, they have won it for the seventh time and high school does a three-peat.

While we're at it, the Imus Football League is in full swing. The University of Perpetual Help-Calamba and Lyceum University of the Philippines-Cavite leads the 6-team tournament undefeated after Day 3. Cellar-dwellers are the ESS-Seton Saints and on the fifth spot is Imus United FC U17 team.  In the middle of the standings are EAC-Cavite Alumni and Imus Go-for-Gold teams at 3rd and 4th spots respectively.

And the 7th Amihan Cup opens on November 17 at the PCU-D’s football field. Several age groups are open for registration now.

By now the world knows that Cavite-born super GM Wesley So claimed the 1st Fischer Random Chess Championship by demolishing fellow super GM and current classical world Champion GM Magnus Carlsen. The Wesley did not lose a single game against Magnus in the said world championship. Congratulations Wes!

In basketball and volleyball, the Inter-School Basketball League and Inter-School Volleyball League, ISBL/ISVL meeting will be opening their games this November and the host venue will be St. Francis of Assisi-Bacoor City. The leagues have been around and have a huge following from around the province. This coincides with CALPS or Cavite Athletic League of Private Schools headed by Mr. Vincent de La Cerna, a teacher, pastor, basketball coach, and official.

And for two Saturdays this November, the 3x3 Age Group Championship of Scholastic Basketball Camp will be held in two different venues. For the younger age groups (Under 11 and Under 13) the games will be held at the Basketball Court of Phase c Treelane 3 Subdivision, Bayan Luma 6 on November 9. And in the older age groups (Under15, Under 17 and Under 19), the venue will be at the basketball court of The Village, Bayan Luma 3 on November 16.

Scholastic Basketball Camp (SBC) runs its developmental basketball tournaments, clinics, and camps on a year-round basis. The Personalized Intensive Training is a once-a-week training with Coach Francis and several coaching staff teaching the kids life skills thru basketball. Summer Camp and the once-in-a-blue-moon Winter Camp is also offered by SBC. 3x3 Age Group Championships and Founders’ Cup are into Season 2 now.  Coach Francis and his partners are envisioning an international-mindedness approach to delivering the services to those who need it most. Slowly and with a careful approach to expansion, basketball is experienced in the SBC way.

With the help of several individuals and friends, the vision is carried out through their aid. Reaching out to several public school students and out-of-school-youth and providing them the opportunity to play and participate, SBC is persevering to deliver its promise.

With all gratitude and humility, Scholastic Basketball Camp sends their heartfelt Salamat po to the following: Ms. Beck Madeja Velasquez of Pulso ng Makabagong Cavitenyo who took a chance on me; to Retired General and Board of Director Gamaliel Cruz of La Trinidad Academy for supporting sports in general and basketball specifically; to my friends Dan Leal of Fil-Australia, Mark Ranet, Nats Tangonan of iCare Intervention Center and Related Exceptionalities, Cynthia Magnawa of the FilCanada Community and Joseph Masinas.

Making sure the kids are served better, these guys contributed too in one way or another to the success of SBC: Leo Panaligan of NJ, Tina Holl of GER, Carlos Ansus, Elen Distor and BJ De Guzman.

It hasn't been easy this season with the departure of one major partner for Scholastic. But with God's grace, we are strengthened to continue and deliver.

All for the Glory of God!

Semper ad Meliora!

Little League Dodgeball September 2013

The Little League Dodgeball Games main man, Teacher Ron, sent us an email with invitation for everyone:
Greetings!
I would like to invite your students/children to join our Little League Dodgeball Games on September 14, 2013 (Saturday) to be held at the Meralco Sports Center Covered Tennis Courts from 9:00am to 12:00nn.  No previous experience necessary and we will conduct a short clinic at the onset of the activity to teach the basic rules and how to play the game.
Dodgeball is a fun sport for children. It uses a ball specifically designed for the sport made of a rubber sac covered with soft foam and cloth to significantly decrease the impact of the ball upon hitting an individual. This makes it relatively safe for children, boys or girls.
Dodgeball is played with teams composed of 6-8 members; all male, all female or mixed gender.  You may form more than one team.  However, in case you can’t meet the minimum of 6 players, you may opt to form a team with the other participants in the venue who also don’t have a team yet.
The participation fee is only Php 100.00 for each team member.  However, for a group of 5 members, you may pay a discounted fee of Php 300.00.  Furthermore, a team of 8 members will pay only Php 500.00. Our future direction is to establish a little league which would meet on a regular schedule to be set by the interested participants.
Should you find this activity interesting for your students/children, kindly send me an email @ ronald.devilla@gmail.comor you may also call our office at 972.5974 on or before Friday, September 6, 2013.
Attached is the poster of the activity. We hope to see you there!
Thank you very much!
Sincerely,

Bye bye Balkman

You're out of the Philippine Basketball Association and you should be packing your stuff now. Head out of the country and back to the US of A. Philippine basketball fans, especially the youth, don't need you.

You don't push you coach nor any of your teammates trying to pacify you. And yes, you cannot do that to any of the game officials. Who knows what else you can do when you throw another tantrum?

Bye bye Balkman!

Try your luck in China maybe or in Europe, but Filipinos don't like and will never like what you have to offer them. Sorry but you should be back to your hometown Balkman!

We don't need you.

If only the management of Petron knew about his previous hardcourt tantrums, maybe the ugly meltdown would not have happened.

Let's see:

Mavs Terrorizes Lakers 2012

Obviously, winning a game in the opening of the NBA season takes more than putting four all-stars, all offensive-minded players in the same team. It was a nightmare for the newly-revamped line-up for Lakers with the addition of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash during the pre-season. With Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol getting in the team plus the two all-stars, they are really strong, on paper.

Do you remember the Lakers line-up in 2004 NBA Season? Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Shaq and Kobe in the same team. They didn't make it and poor Malone and Payton had to end their NBA careers without any championship ring.

And the October 30, 2012 NBA game between Dallas Mavericks and LA Lakers was a de javu:

Failed in FIBA: Smart Gilas 2

Smart Gilas 2 lost its last two games when it mattered most. The final score in the game against Iran was 77-60 which was played yesterday, September 21. If we won the game against the Iranians, we would have played for the gold against the Japanese. And today we played for the bronze and we lost against Qatar with the score 79-63.

Remember our post comparing the internationally known basketball coach Rajko Toroman and PBA coach Chot Reyes?

We now have the answers to our questions.

Here are my thoughts coach, you can use these as your fair enough excuses for the 4th place finish in the Qualifier for 2013 FIBA Asia Championship:

  • Poor officiating. The technical foul given by the Lebanese Referee. Remember the technical foul meted on Chot Reyes some years ago? I don't know if you remember that but I definitely do. It was a costly mistake from the basketball guru back then and it definitely made matters worse for his team this time. Try to watcht the video below and listen to what the Dean of Philippine Sports journalism has to say coaching in the international basketball.

  • Not enough time. Smart Gilas 2 was formed in less than six months. Same old, same old! I don't know if we are all afflicted with amnesia as a nation or we're plain stupid. Doing the same things all over again but expecting different results. if this is not amnesia then I'm sure this is short-sightedness.
  • Mismatched basketball skills. I truly believe that PBA is not NBA and that we should not do a "Dream Team" approach. This Dream Team  problem is basically rooted on two things: mismatched basketball skills and not enough time. When I say mismatched skills, I mean our professional basketball players aren't good enough to play in the FIBA system which follows amateur rules. Unless the Philippines can send 12 players with an average height of 6'8" whose skills are those of Danny Siegle during his MVP-like years and with a basketball system ala-Ron Jacobs or Rajko Toroman, forget it. We don't stand a chance against Iran, China and Korea's basketball program. Check the stats of the game and you won't believe what you will see in the Turn over section.
  • Coaching. We can send all the coaches PBA for our national team together and we will still fail. The reason is simple: FIBA system is not PBA. Don't go out and telling the Filipinos that we've got a chance or that the drive and pass is is answer to our dream of ever winning the gold in FIBA. C'mon guys, you know very well it's not.
  • Injury. Injuries happen  because of accidents or because of poor conditioning exercises prior to the tournament. I've heard stories that Rajko Toroman was a fucked-up coach in terms of preparation: system play, drills and more drills. Players hated him for this but in the end, the team he handled was far better on court. They were quicker and they played good basketball IQ. You can have an off-night offensively but never an off-night defensively.
  • Am I rooting for Toroman? Not necessarily. We don't know each other and I only know him through the media. Am I against Reyes? Definitely no but history have shown that he was never successful in international basketball.

And please don't go into the commitment-sacrifice-respect talk for these players. They are paid to play for the country and the best thing they can ever do is to give us the gold. We rally behind you and guys come up with poor defensive rotations, poor basketball sense and worst of all, you hide behind these talks of commitment etc.

Not that talk please.

MVP trusts the coaching staff of Smart Gilas 2 and he has poured out his support in SG2. Is there a basketball program installed in our country? There was I know some years ago but then when it failed to bag the gold, we shifted back to the proven and tested to fail system: PBA players.

Sad part for Philippine basketball is that football is slowly inching its way up in the awareness level of the Filipinos. Sooner or later, basketball will just be another sports in the Philippines. It will no longer be the centerpiece of UAAP and NCAA.

I don't want a 4th place finish, I want the gold.

Bad trip talo na naman tayo!!!

Level Up Basketball Training Center

The Level Up Basketball Training Center is now on its third year of providing developmentally sound basketball training for players of all levels. The Level Up program was initiated by player turned coach Leo Molina.

Here is his personal letter which I requested for our blog post:

Level Up Basketball Training Center started January of 2010. Level Up started its first Module at the  Lourdes School of Mandaluyong Gym. Another training center was set up in RFM Gym in Pioneer Mandaluyong City and currently, we have the Beacon School Covered Court in Taguig City as our venue.

In the 2009 Palarong Pambansa-Tacloban City, I received the Palarong Pambansa Coach of the Year, Elementary Division. I was the very first recipient of this award this was very meaningful to me for two reasons: one, Tacloban is my father's hometown and I dedicate this award to him and second, receiving the award gave me the impression that I did something right in training my student-athletes become better students in and out of the classrooms and basketball courts.

Program planning was difficult because I wanted to create a developmentally-sound basketball program aimed at the Filipino player's physique and mentality. It took me about a year to come up with a program that considers the strengths and weaknesses of every child enrolling in it.

Several consultations were made prior to starting Level Up.  I consulted with PBA Alaska Aces Trainor Gus Vargas, where I was an understudy for a few months for the Team. PBA official doctor, Dra. Pie Aycardo, was also consulted. She was was my doctor and was very helpful in bringing me back from my basketball-related injury in 2010.

Level Up trains as young as 5 year old & Parent's who aspire to teach their kids the science of basketball and the values you can get from playing the game.

Level Up's mission-vision is to produce Student-Athletes that are responsible in their academic load too.

Level Up consistently produces student-athletes who plays UAAP, NCAA and other schools having a competitive basketball programs. The benefits are overflowing and the scholarship they get from these schools is just the icing on the cake.

Now Level Up is on its 3rd year, we are now looking into the addition of Module 3 to complete a year-round training and tournament program.    Hopefully, Level Up will produce more student-athletes and help more parents in getting their kids into sports.

If you want your game to be good, better or best, Level Up!

GM Eugene Torre on Chess Development

I found a YouTube video of Asia's very first chess grandmaster, Eugene Torre. In the video he gave us a glimpse of what it was like growing up in a chess family living in a basically non-chess country, the Philippines of the 60's.

He reiterated and explained a couple of times the role of his family, especially of his father and older brothers, in training him in the game of chess.

With all the accomplishments he has made and the pride and glory he has given to Philippine chess, he never forgets. Truly, a role-model for every Filipino chess player to look up to.

Kudos to the people behind the production, Entrebuff.com:

Lazarte Banned for Life

Great news but still, I'd love all the boxing organizations around the world to have a "No Boxing Event" in Argentina. Banning Lazarte for life is one thing, the f@#cked-up crowd is another thing and they must learn from this. The Argentine Boxing Commission Chief should be ashamed of what happened and that he be sacked for his statements after the fight.

The Philippine Senate sent a strong message against this with a resolution recalling Philippine Ambassador to Argentina Rey Carandang. The resolution also asks the Argentine Ambassador to the Philippines Joaquin Daniel Otero. Some camps were even asking for the Philippine-Argentina ties be cut-off because of the participated in by the unschooled, uneducated Argentinians.

Why not?

Good for you crazy, barbaric, stupid Argentinians!

Watch the riot-marred boxing match between Casimero and Lizarte.

Casimero KOs Lazarte for IBF Jr Flyweight

After this bout, boxing organizations and promoters must never consider Argentina as a place to hold international boxing matches. Argentinians are backwards, barbaric and has a lot of learning to do when it comes to boxing and sports in general.

Good thing our very own, Johreil Casimero held on and bravely fought amidst Lizarte's dirty tactics and the referee's unprofessional handling of the boxing match to capture the vacant IBF Junior Flyweight Championship.

Empty bottles and chairs were thrown into the ring right before the stupid referee declared Filipino boxer Johreil Casimero the winner of the bout. Fans even punched members of the Casimero team when they rushed into the ring.

Argentina, such a bad place to be!

Truly, cheaters never last or for the matter, never win!

Here is the video which highlights all the stupidity Luis Lazarte and the crazy crowd in Argentina:

Ateneo wins UAAP Basketball Championship 2011

Ateneo de Manila wins their 4th straight basketball championship in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines with a dominating second half play from Monfort, Ravena, Salva and Slaughter. It was a finals sweep by the Ateneans against the Morayta-based Far Eastern University Tamarraws.

The scores were 82-64 for the first game and 82-69 for the second game. Clearly, this shows us the consistency of Ateneo Blue Eagles domination against the FEU Tamarraws who were played for the gold in last year's basketball championship.

Congratulations to the Ateneo Blue Eagles!

Milo Little Olympics

The Milo Little Olympics NCR Leg opens this weekend at the Marikina Sports Park, Marikina City.  The olympics has twelve events: athletics, football, swimming, volleyball, badminton, chess, gymnastics, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo and scrabble.

The National Milo Little Olympics is happening in Lingayen, Pangasinan on November this year. Grassroots development has always been a key program of Milo and finally, the public sector is learning from the private sector.

You want to find out how it all began? Read the History of Milo Olympics below:

The Little Olympics for Big Dreams

In the hearts of little champions, big dreams are waiting to come to life. Back then, these dreams partially comes to life in small town tournaments, local inter-school leagues and even informal street competition amongst friends. In the true spirit of building champions in life, MILO® saw the growing need for these little champions’ big dreams to come front and center.

In 1988, MILO® launched the MILO® Little Olympics in Manila. The league held competitions in 11 sports namely - athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball. And though the league was initially based in Manila, many little champions savored the taste of what it is like to have their dream of playing in a big stage come true. That is why in 1996, the MILO® Little Olympics was also held in Cebu. And expanded to Cagayan de Oro in 1997 and in Pangasinan in 1998. In the short span of time, MILO® has successfully provided a sporting event that little champions look forward to other than Palarong Pambansa and as well as other major sporting events in the south.

After years of successfully mounting regional games, the MILO® Little Olympics finally went nationwide with the first ever National Finals held in Cebu City on October 23, 2009. With the Queen City of the South serving as host, little champions from all over the nation came and competed for glory. Thousands of little champions got to play, thousands of big dreams came true. The MILO® Little Olympics is now the premiere nationwide junior interschool league for elementary and highschool student-athletes. Little champions nationwide can now show their excellence in sports, their drive, determination, discipline and other champion’s values to their peers throughout the nation. This kind of exposure teaches them to be champions not just in sports but in life as well.

In its 20 years as an inter-regional league and three years as a premiere annual national sports meet, the MILO® Little Olympics has produced and discovered little champions that have donned the country’s colors. Little champions with big achievements in international leagues like the South East Asian Games, World Youth Cup and the Asian Junior Track meet.

Great things truly start from small beginnings. It began with the need for little champions to have a place where their big dreams will come true. Now, the MILO® Little Olympics, with the help of the little champions, parents, coaches and organizers, has now become one of the most recognizable and sought-after league. A sporting event where every game and every match helps build champions in sports and in life.

Philippines Losses in Semis Game against Iran

We lost with a double digit score against Iran in our semi-finals match minutes ago in the Jones Cup 2011. Coming into the semi-finals, we were placed on the second spot with a 5-2 win-loss score behind unbeaten Korean team. Watching the Smart Gilas Philippine Basketball Team play against Iran tonight was so disappointing because this was the first time I was able to watch them play a full game - and they played badly! We beat Iran in our very first game in the tournament.

JV Casio was on the injured list so he did not play and early in the 4th quarter, Marc Barocca twisted his left foot ankle and never returned in the game. Very evident in the game were:

  • Smart Gilas Team has to find ways to play efficiently as a team without JV Casio
  • Iran's Ehdadi wreaked havoc in the center and no one could stop him except for the wonderful block Japeth Aguilar gave him in the latter part of the game
  • The worst game for the Philippines came in the semis
Well tomorrow Sunday the Philippine Team will be playing for the Bronze medal against the hometown heroes, Chinese-Taipei Basketball team which we beat in the elimination round. We are not assured of the medal yet --remember the games are held in their own country and expect to get homecourt calls for these Taiwanese players.

Watch the games live at ESPN or AKTV Chanel on free TV or if you are interested, look out for livestreaming video sites for the games in the Jones Cup 2011.

Go, go, go Philippines!

Chess for the Summer Olympics

Surprise, surprise!

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Mr. Prospero Pichay Jr. and the Head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Mr. Peping Cojuanco Jr. The Philippines signed the first ever, official letter of appeal to Mr. Jacques Rogge for the inclusion of chess in the programme of the Summer Olympic Games. Mr. Jacques Rogge is the Head of the International Olympic Committee which is responsible for the quadrennial global sports event.

Although the chess world has its own Olympiad, I bet inclusion of the game in the programme will usher in a new era for chess. No longer it will be sneered at as just a board game nor be construed as a non-sports entity.

Its a long shot I guess but with the Philippines being the first to request for chess to be in the Olympics, things look brighter.

Phl Azkals Win Over Sri Lanka

A 4-0 win by the Philippine Azkals Football Team against Sri Lanka in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers may just be the break Philippine Football has all been waiting for. Footballers of the country would say that this is the sports for Filipinos and nothing else. Football academies all over the Philippines would agree to this and ever since the Azkals came into the scene, enrollment have gone tremendously up.

Although the gears one needs maybe quite a bit expensive and the field to be used in a game maybe quite big, I'm sure entrepreneurs would milk this one out of every wannabe Azkals out there.

Football has arrived! Congratulations to Azkals and good luck to the football program in the Philippines. I'm sure a lot of Fil-foreign players will be given the chance to play for our country. I wonder what happened to the native, home-grown footballers specially those coming from Iloilo.

Donaire KO's Montiel

Nonito Donaire Jr. is the King of the Bantamweights after he sent Fernando Montiel of Mexico to the canvass in the second round match of their fight yesterday. With the win, Donaire Jr. the World Bozing Council and the World Boxing Organization Bantamweight Titles.

Checking the Wikipedia entry for the Filipino boxing champ, I learned that he is an ambidextrous fighter who switches to the southpaw for a defensive purposes and then uses the orthodox stance for attacking. Surely this is something every opponent must worried about.
