2008 Xavier Interscholastics

Hey there!

It's only November and the people behind the Xavier Interscholastic Chess Tournament is already sending their invites... Hmmm! Don't you just like it when you get the feeling that a tournament is organized way advance and infos are sent out three month before the games?

Here is the letter:

Greetings!

The Athletics and Physical Education – Xavier would like to invite your school to
participate in the 5th Xavier Interscholastic Chess Invitational to be held on 24 and 31 January2009 at the Fr. Cortina Sports Center Function Room, Xavier School,
Greenhills West, San Juan, Metro Manila.

Like the previous years, we shall have both Grade School and High School divisions.
This tournament is open to bonafide students of your school. While in essence, an
individual tournament, we shall also be recognizing team effort. Each school may field any number of teams of four players each in both divisions. Tournament fee is
P500.00 per individual player or P2000.00 per team of four.

Please fill up and sign the confirmation page attached and send it to us through Fax:
722-1980 or Email: gndelaspenas@xs.edu.ph or jsy@cismanila.org or submit to Xavier
School Athletics Office on or before 16 January 2009. All fees should also be in by 16 January 2009. They may be paid through the Xavier School Cashier's Office located at the Administration Building along Xavier Street. Please make checks payable to Xavier School.

also call the tournament director, John Sy, at (0917) 833-3825 TO ALLOW SCHEDULING OF AN APPROPRIATELY SIZED VENUE, PLEASE REGISTER YOUR TEAMS BY 16 JANUARY 2009.

Tournament Rules

Format and Time Control

1. The tournament format shall be a 6-round, one game per round, INDIVIDUAL SWISS
SYSTEM with barred pairings. Players from the same team will not be paired against
each other.

2. The time control is game in 45 minutes with no increment.

3. The winner of the tournament will be the individual with the highest point total and will be awarded the championship medal. The first and second runner-ups will also be recognized with medals.

4. The team whose players have accumulated the highest combined score will win the
Xavier Interscholastic Chess Cup. The first and second runner-up teams will also be
awarded runner-up trophies.

Eligibility and Participation

1. The tournament shall be open to all bona fide students of the invited schools.
Tournament officials reserve the right toseek clarification of the eligibility of any
participating player so proof of enrollment (valid student ID card) should be available.

2. Each invited school may field any number of teams composed of four players each—no
alternates. The schools must provide the number of teams participating and the names
of the players on each team in advance to the tournament officials. The list of players on each team may be changed until the tournament begins.

3. Once the tournament begins, no changing of player rosters will be allowed.

4. As this is an individual Swiss system tournament, board orders will not be necessary.

Tournament Mechanics

1. Each team is requested to supply at least two tournament size boards and sets and two chess clocks. The host school will be able to provide a number of boards and sets for the tournament but this may not be enough for everyone.

2. In the event that both players have boards and sets (in the absence of host-provided board and set) and clocks, the player playing Black shall have the choice of which board, set, and clock to use.

3. All games must be recorded. An official score sheet, signed by both players attesting to the result of the game, must be submitted by each player to the tournament officials at the end of each game.

Tie Breaks

1. Ties will be broken only at the end of the tournament to determine the top three
individual winners.

2. In the event that two players tie for a winning slot, the head to head result shall be the first tie break used

3. If the result between the two players was a draw and if more than two players tie for the same winning slot, the tie will be broken using the modified median method and the cumulative method in that order.
