Pixar Shorts: Gerry's Game
It was another family dinner night to remember at SM Bacoor tonight... no it has nothing to do with what we ate nor "kakulitan" I had to go thru with my tots.
It has something to do with this Pixar short film we saw on the window of one of the appliance shops in that mall. Funny, smart and yes, chesstacticaly hilarious!Street smart, witty!
Watch it here.
By the way, Las Pinas Private Schools Athletic Association (LAPRISAA) Chess Tournament is happening tomorrow Saturday from 800 AM - 600 PM at the covered court of Bloomfield Academy, Las Pinas City.
Officiated by the Chess Arbiters Asssociation of the Philippines, the tourb=nament will be directed by National Arbiter Ferdinand Reyes Sr. who has for 20 years been the commissioner for the chess tournament of LAPRISAA.
UPHR Juniors Team will be represented by Elxander Servidad, Tristan Wayne S Dandan and Darell John Dado.
Good luck to all of the participating schools and players!
Here's another "standard" game I had at FICS:
Another win with my ...c6 ...d5 first two moves against a higher rated opponent.

Part Of The Game
Hey there!
The Norwegian wonderboy GM Magnus Carlsen plays not just chess but also football, very European right? Anyways, I'd like to talk about football for while and take a break from our beloved game of chess.
We al know how big football is around the world, specially Europe. That's why Carlsberg Brewery launched a football web-TV-channel www.partofthegame.tv.
Check out those funny videos, crazy football-loving fanswho insanely cross boundaries between fanaticism and obsession. As if these features aren't enough, you can upload your own collection of never-before-seen footages of football games.
Football, soccer, chess, football and soccer, they do mix!

Nice one!

Back to Back Olympiad Gold
The 38th World Chess Olympiad is over and Team Armenia won the gold for the second straight time!
The Olympiad champions who were 9th seed at the start of the tournament finished with 9 points followed by 8th seed Israel who went on to capture the silver with 8 points and taking home the bronze is 10th seed Team USA who also scored 8 points but had to yield to 3rd spot when tiebreaks were applied.
For a complete list of the final rankings of the Open Category, visit chess-results.com.
Individual board prizes will show us GM's Peter Leko of Hungary and Boris Gelfand of Israel sharing the top spot among the elite board one players with a score of 10 points.
And in board 2, GM Vladimir Akopian of Armenia ranked number one with 8 points and followed by GM Francisco Pons Vallejo of Spain with 9 points, hmmm? Why is that? Maybe it has something to do with tiebreaks. Our very own GM Wesley So took the 11th spot, congratulations!
Board 3 top performer was taken by another Armenian, GM Gabriel Sargissian with a score of 9 points.
Board 4 top performer goes to GM Dragisa Blagojevic of Montenegro with 8 points. Newly-minted GM John Paul Gomez joins the elite 20 opn the 19th, congratulations!
Board 5 goes to GM Dmitry Jakovenko of Russia with a total of 7 points out of 9 games. GM Darwin Laylo takes his spot in the elite 20 on the 19th, congratulations!
In the Women's section, we have 4th seed Georgia winning the gold with 8 points, 2nd seed Ukraine winning silver with 8 points and 7th seed USA taking the bronze with a score of 8 points, tiebreaks applied.
Here is the complete list of the final rankings of the women's category.
For the Individual board prizes, we have GM Chiburdanidze Maia of Georgia winning with 7.5 points for board 1, IM Anna Zatonskih of USA on board 2 with 8 points,IM Kosintseva Nadezhda of Russia on board 3, IM Majdan Joanna of Poland on board 4 and WGM Zdebskaja Natalia of Ukraine on board 5. Interestingly, RP ladies' Camacho Chardine Cheradee and Bernales Christy Lamiel joins the elite 20 for their board assignments (4 and 5) on 17th and 15th respectively, congratulations!

Congratulations to everyone who considers himself/herself to be part of the chess kingdom for this successful Olympiad shows the whole world that chess is very much alive and relevant today and forevermore.
This is another learning experience not just for the players but also for the NCFP people who man the management aspect of chess in the Philippines. We could have seen GM Eugene Torre score points on board 1 had he not excused himself from the National Qualifying which I believe should be the basis of any team composition. We all know that he's a legend but hey, let's follow rules ok?
To all our players who represented our country very well on and off the board, thank you!

Night Knight!
Hey there!
A game position I reached against Damien of FICS with a rating of 1600+ the other night. This game was the first I had using 15/G since I've always loved playing bullets at FICS. My standard rating was only 1100+ before the game.
I was white and it was my turn to move:
I had 6 minutes remaning and had to make sure I don't misfire or lose ammunition in the remaining moments of the fight. Around 4 minutes on my time, Damien whistled on our chat forum this: Are you still there?"
The game continues:
1. Qf2 Rh8
2. Qf5 Qb7
My opponent resigned. How would've the game continued?
Another game I had, this time against MrBrooks with a rating of 1525 and our time control was 16/G. Another "standard game" for me, one of the few.
Oh yes, MrBrooks was a sore loser! He stalked me in the forum and told me computers made life easy for me. Oh well, I had fun winning and he made it memorable all the more.

Momentum Shooting Up
Hey there!
RP Men's Team drew 2 - 2 with an all-GM Greece team in the 4th round and a 5th round win against another all-GM Iran Team 2.5 - 1.5 in the 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden Germany.
RP Ladies losses their match against Team Belarus with a score of 1.5 - 2.5 in the 4th round but went on to win their 5th round match against the Kiwis with a score of 3.5 - .5.
The 38th World Chess Olympiad is now on it's 6th round and yes, Team Philippines momentum is shooting and hopefully it lasts till the end for a good top ten finish.
Going into the 6th round, RP Men's Team is placed on 28th of the standings while our Ladies Team is on 58th. It will be Sweden vs RP Ladies and Philippines vs Spain.
Men's Team Philippines, do not forget what those Spaniards did to our ancestors, they made life miserable for us for 300 plus years. They called the Filipinos Indios, Illustrado....It's payback time! We've saved their colonies, now we'll rock their brains out! Go Team Philippines! Hehehehe!

To Pin or Not To Pin
I arrived in this position while playing 20/G with Tristan this afternoon. In this position, black played Qc6 which I replied with Qc8+. The game ended there because he used up all his remaining time and I reminded him the time loss story of Andronico Yap which Lilet told us some months ago... well we laughed so hard we ended up trying to get the best continuation for both sides.
First concern, a longer time control could have forced me to move Bb5 after black's Qc6, the pin is a power tripper right? Hehehehe! Any of his moves I could have followed with Rh1-e1.
But anyways, how would you have continued? Please send me your thoughts. My idea here is:
1. Qc8+ ... Ke7
2. Bb5 Nd7
3. Re1+ Ne5
And black escapes? Temporarily with tremendous material loss.
Don't use your chess playing sofware yet here. Am sleepy now, Monday tomorrow and I gotta head for bed now.
Bis' morgen!
RP Wins VS Monaco
Hey there!
We won our 3rd round match against Monaco and 2nd round match against Algeria with a 2.5 vs 1.5 for our Men's team. GM Wesley So did not play in the 3rd, Gm Bong Villamayor didn't get the win on board one, GM Gonzales drew his game while GM Laylo and IM Gomez won their matches in the said round.
For our women's team, we had a winning score of 3.5 vs .5 against the team from Yemen. Perena, Camacho and Bernales won their matches while Cua drew her game.
In the 4th round, our boys are paired against an all-GM Greece team. GM Villamayor rests and our wonderboy plays on board one, Gonzales on 2nd, Gomez on 3rd and Laylo on 4th board respectively while RP Ladies are paired against team Belarus.
Good luck Team Philippines!

China vs Philippines
Now we've had another screw up...
Where did I get the Philippines vs ICP team for the 1st round?
Anyways, China scored 2.1 vs 1.5 against our team with GM Wesley So winning against GM Ni Hua, IM John Paul Gomez getting a draw against GM Li Chao. GM's Villamayor and Gonzales didn't score a point in the 1st round.
In the Women's division, Philippines drew their match against the Lithuanians, 2:2. This is a win for our Ladies as they had to play against higher rated opponents.
Congratulations!
Here is the second round pairings for the 38th Dresden Olympiad
Open and Women's Divivision.

Dresden Olympiad
While I was away minding my personal life, chessdom continued to go thru it's evolution with the Dresden Olympiad finally here. We have the 1st round pairings and we're playing against the IPC.
The past three weeks have been so torturous for me as I had to work on the MGIS Tigers schedule, deal away my way out of my Morocco mix-up which by the way is not pushing thru.
With CNN's historic "hologram" newscasting last week, I don't know if our Olympiad Team will do the same... One thing is for sure, we are here to support them!
Win win win! That's the way of the world!
