Fatal draws

Hi there!

Yesterday, I got the news report from Marlon about FM candidate Paolo Del Mundo beating GM Mark Paragua but only read it today. I wanted to call this post as "homegrown meets ateneo-bred" but when I read the whole article, I was surprised to find out GM Mark P agreed to a draw in 5 moves against IM Finegold in round 4.

Opening draws? Wow! GM level at that... Sayang ito! Mark could have won that game and had a different tournament result.

As for Paolo, he's back in form and it will take only a little while before he gets that GM title. Philippines has the talent, but I dont think we have the managerial skills present in the organizational level of the sports. At least thats how people view it now.

I don't think financial issue exists because the govenrment, thru the Philippine Sports Commission has alloted money for the sports and chess is one of them. Ok, assuming it is not enough, the dough, the bread, we can always ask for corporate sponsorship. You know, these corporate institutions are looking for outreach activities and chess is a good thing for them. We simply have to send them a letter, a proposal. Probably meet up with them. Even my grade 10 students are doing these "sponsor-me-in-this-school-project-of-mine" find ways and actually succeed in doing so.

Anyways, my wishlist:

1. Bobby Ang heading the NCFP!
2. Manny Benitez with him
3. All things emanating from the two.
4. The rest, followers!

5. Oopps! Not to mention the professionally-run CAAP, the people behind them!
6. Media coverage is a must! CJAP can take care of this.
7. NCFP Rating tournaments. The best way to introduce people to chess and keep them in the fold is to give them ratings. This will motivate them.
8. Chess Caravan should be continued.
9. The Weekender
10.Philippine Chess Engine

DEL MUNDO BEATS PARAGUA WINS ATLANTIC OPEN CHESS
BY: MARLON BERNARDINO

FIDE master candidate Anton Paolo Del Mundo demolished Grandmaster Mark Paragua in the fifth and final round to tie at first along with three others in the recently concluded 39 th annual Atlantic Open, a top chess event held in Westin Hotel in Washington DC last August 24-26.

Del Mundo tied for first with three others, IM Benjamin Finegold, IM Mikhail Zlotnikov, and US Master Chris J. Mabe. They scored 4 points in 5 rounds. Each of them received US$1,200.

Del Mundo has topped three notional chess events in a period of two months. He emerged co-champion of the Under 2400 Section at the World Open starting July, and followed that up with the feat of being the first Filipino to win the US Open, a prestigious event held for the past 108 years, and before August ends, the Atlantic Open. This is perhaps the best consecutive performances by a Filipino in mainland US.

Paragua, the country's ranked No.3 who possessed an Elo rating of 2525 showed a strong performance with 3.5 points out of 4, and had the chance to be the solo champion except for a sorry loss in the final round to Del Mundo. He drew with eventual co-champion IM Finegold in 5 moves in the fourth round, which proved fatal because of the unexpected loss.

The big chess event in DC was well-attended, and strong players like IM Emory Tate, IM Brian Smith, IM Justin Sarkar among 97 players in the Open were out of contention before the last round.(MARLON BERNARDINO).
