Chess Training Program for Everyone

Here is a Chess Training Program I found online. Notice the balance between the theories and experience. Take note of the balance between the study of the phases of the game too, opening, middle game, endgame, tactics and strategy.

Just like any academic endeavor, you get the best out of the theoretical and application of what you've studied. In chess, studying one or two openings and using it in your games for more than 3 months will give you a deeper insight into the variations, positional and tactical.

Correspondence Chess for 2012

Here is my first win this year in a correspondence chess tournament over at Chess.com. The Chess Unlimited Mini Tournament 5 Days per move Part 4 has 20 players with a maximum of four players per group. The top two players for each group will advance to the next round. Check the groupings and pairings here.

We have a contributor from St. Scholastica's College Ms. Alex Jewel Leonor, a third year SPED Major. She shares to us her views and her perspectives on the the volunteering program she joined in called For the Kids 2012.   


Here it is:


Being someone for somebody voluntarily is a fulfilling action that can lift up your heart. For the Kids 2012 (FTK) was an experience to boost up our talents and skills in handling children of all abilities. As a L.O.V.E. volunteer, great opportunities abound for college students from La Salle and other universities in and around Manila. SPED Olympics happens once a year and once a year we share our laughter, fun, games, food, and company with the children. I can say that being a volunteer, one carries a with her a responsibility as big as one's love for the children. The child will be under our supervision for the whole day. We were given an assignment and the ration was 2 is to 1. Two volunteers to one child,  one ate and one kuya. 


There was a bond established between us and at the same time we met new friends along the way. People from DLSU were accomodating, quite the opposite of what was expected from them. Snub!
. 
Handling children was one of the thrills of FTK. It wasn't difficult to handle a child. I told myself that if I was the only one who had the child, I wouldn't have survived. He was simply too strong for me to handle. At first, my partner Ked and I didn't have any problems with the child. He was easy to be around with but tantrums came and we couldn't we can't stop him! He didn't want to get off the microphone. He even peed on his pants. I didn't know what to do but my partner was there to help me and the father of the child. 


My idea of getting my child off the stage and the microphone was not good, he was unstoppable. We were not able to finish all 3 games, just 1 game.
 
But every FTK volunteer has the end goal of giving joy to our assigned child, make them happy.


We wanted them to enjoy each moment we were with them,while we were under under the sun, literally. My skin was burnt and it was really bad. My partner asked me if I wasn't tired and I told him "No" because I was happy the child was enjoying his time. My partner gave up and needed to rest for quite awhile. Heart problems he had and he needed it. 


I saw the passion, the zeal that every teacher must have. My partner was not a SPED major, but then, his heart was really for the kids. You can do your work without any complains if you love your work.


For the Kids 2012 was a blast! It was a successful event where everyone enjoyed especially the kids. We  learned a lot from them!

For the Kids 2012 was really a day for the kids! To make them smile and take a break from the usual stuff that they do. Our desire to make the kids happy was a success. We were all successful in painting smiles on their faces that day. That Sunday was one of the most unforgettable Sundays that ever happened to me and I'm sure also for the other volunteers. 


As Scholasticans, we are very willing and motivated to lend a hand for every kid. The love for kids were clearly seen as the Education majors of St. Scholastica's College lend a hand to every child.

SPICE Boy GM So

Remember the seven-member group of congressmen Estrada called as the "Bright Boys"? They were openly critical of then President Joseph Ejercito Estrada and they played a key role in the removal of Estrada in Malacanan in 2001.

The group consisted of the following:

And in Philippine chess, GM Wesley So has become a SPICE Boy. This was confirmed by no other than GM Susan Polgar when I asked her about the rumored move of Wesley to the US of A for college education via Twitter:

This is the best move Wesley So has made in his entire life and I congratulate him for doing so. Although I've never been a big fan of the global education system that is in place, no thanks to the industrialization, I still believe getting a college degree will give him the confidence and good self-image in the end.

Don't go Iskul Bukol Wesley! Make the best of what is given to you and remember, your generation will be looking up to you for inspiration and as a role-model. The next few years will hopefully make you a stronger, willful and better person outside of chess.

2011 DEPED SPED Awards

DepEd fetes outstanding SPED teachers and centers.

The Department of Education announces the winners of the 2011 National Search for Outstanding Special Education (SPED) teachers and SPED centers across the country in recognition of their exemplary work in responding to the learning needs of children with learning disabilities or giftedness.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said these special needs teachers play a very important role in making Education For All (EFA) a reality. “Inclusive education means all learners including those who are differently-abled and we have the SPED teachers and centers nationwide to thank for their exemplary work,” Luistro said.

There were categories used to better classify and appreciate the different areas of exceptionalities such that there is an outstanding teacher for children with autism, hearing impairment, visual impairment, intellectual disability, learning disability and children with intellectual giftedness.

The national winners for SPED teachers teaching children with autism are Ma. Cristina Cardinal of Sta Ana Elementary School SPED Center,  NCR, first place; Marife de Guzman of Tomana ES SPED Center, Pangasinan, second place; and Marilou Oliveros of Sinag SPED Center of Kalalake, Olongapo City, third place.

For SPED teachers for children with hearing impairment, first place winner is Salvacion Olinares of P. Gomez ES SPED Center, NCR; second place winner is Rosebeth Gabay of La Union SPED Center of San Fernando City, third placer is Mylene Cosico of Candelaria West SPED Center of Quezon.

For SPED teachers  for children with visual impairment, first placer is Apolinaria Sun of West City Exceptional Child Learning Center of Dumaguete City; second placer is Estela Sembrano of M. Hizon ES SPED Center of NCR and third placer is Sheryll Ativo of Legazpi City SPED Center of Region 5.

Best SPED  teachers for children with intellectual disability are Zoraida Gonzales, first place,  of La Union SPED Center in Region 1; Evelyn Basa, second place, of  Baguio City SPED Center; and Juliet Sepe Sonjaco of West City Exceptional Child Learning Center of Dumaguete City.

The winners for teachers  handling children with learning disabilities are Flordelina Lee, first place, of Baguio City SPED Center; Myrakay Palana, second place, of Sto. Nino SPED Center in Tacloban City and Luz Cabogrin, third place, of Dipolog City SPED Center in Region 9.

For teachers teaching children with giftedness, first place winner is Lelibeth Duran of West City Exceptional Child Learning Center of Dumaguete City; second placer is Amcy Esteban of Legarda Es SPED Center of NCR and third placer is Aubrey Marie Oasay of Catalino Acosta Memorial ES SPED Center of Batac City in Region 1.

Meanwhile the country’s top three SPED Centers are Baguio City SPED Center, first place; Butuan City SPED Center, second place; and Angeles City SPED Center, third place.

The winners received a plaque of recognition each and cash prizes.

A bond of P100.00 is required from all players, which will be returned to him/her after the tournament. However, the same will be forfeited in favor of the organizer if the player defaults in one of his/her games.

The Great Chess Movie

The Great Chess Movie is documentary film and it was first shown last April 6, 1983 at the Film Forum. The film was the work of Gilles Carle and Camille Coudari.

After last Sunday's CBS News 60 Minutes with Magnus Carlsen, I began to look for classic, decades old film clips that features chess on YouTube. Prior to the Magnus Carlsen CBS News episode, they replayed their 60 Minutes with Bobby Fischer and this really did the trick. It made me want to see more of the chess classics.

I made it for the Holy Eucharist celebration last night with my three kids minus wife and 3 month old baby. Ash Wednesday it was yesterday and the Cathedral of Imus was busy hosting the Sunday-like schedule services. With all the never-ending buzz about the world's end, it helps that we hold on to our faith with conviction and sincerity.

Lenten Season is the time of Spiritual Purification

What are we really celebrating during Lent?

Basically, the season of Lent is the time of preparation Easter Sunday. It is the season of penance and prayer before the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic calls on every believer to pray and fast for 40 days. For the age group 18-60, they are to skip one meal a day and avoid meat foods. For 14 years old and above, they are expected to avoid any forms of meat foods during the 40 days of purification. Purification process can take on many forms and practices. This is also known as abstinence and fasting.

There is a difference between abstinence and fasting but it is closely related. Abstinence is the avoidance of meat which has been a spiritual practice since the early beginnings of the church while fasting is the restriction one adheres to on the quantity of the food we eat.

Fasting and Abstinence are two powerful spiritual tools which helps us tame our body to concentrate more on higher, Godly things. Take note, these practices are voluntary and that almost everyone has a thing or two to say about it.

For our cultural note, one superstition I grew up with when it comes to Lenten practices is that we are not suppose to take a bath on Good Friday.  It may be funny to listen to such superstitions but honestly, I think it has a lot to do with the spirituality of Filipinos from long ago.

Remember, we have prayer vigils for almost all occasions and these prevents you from completing your 8-10 hour sleep. To prevent the young ones from getting sick after the prayer vigils, most probably the older generations wanted to prevent them from taking a shower.

So how will you participate in Christ's Passion this Lenten Season?

60 Minutes with Magnus Carlsen

CBS News presented 60 Minutes with Magnus Carlsen, the world's current top player on the FIDE ratings. The 21-year old Norwegian also known as the Mozart of Chess is being compared the late great American 11th World Chess Champion Robert "Bobby" Fischer".


While Magnus Carlsen earned the highest title in chess at the age of 13 years and 148 days in April 26, 2004. Robert "Bobby" Fischer became a grandmaster at the age of 15 and 1/2 years old. 


But unknown to many, Carlsen and Fischer are said to be having the characteristics of a person with Asperger Syndrome. 


If you'll ask me, I don't see this as a negative element in their lives. In fact I've been working for more than a decade now in the area of special education and I totally understand why there's this buzz about Carlsen and Fischer.

The New York Times even run an article Dealing in Chess, Bet on This Norwegian and in it it said:

Henrick Carlsen said his son’s progress in chess was typical for him. “Sometimes, he’s been thought to be slow,” he said. But when he gets interested in something, “then he accelerates.” He added, “I don’t think he is conscious of this approach. It is innate.” He said that his son, from a young age, exhibited an ability to focus single-mindedly. One day, the father recalled, when Magnus was 4, he spent six hours building a train out of Legos. A half-hour after he went to bed, Mr. Carlsen found him in the dark “wide awake and staring into space, and I thought, ‘O.K., this is too much.’ ”

Magnus’s parents have not had their son tested for developmental disorders because he is well-enough adjusted socially. “Magnus seems to be fortunate enough to have the right characteristics to be considered normal despite the fact that he has some traits that might lead others to call him abnormal,” his father said. “Most people like him.”

But Carlsen clarified this over at Chessbase' Magnus Carlsen on Golden Goal.

Lazarte Banned for Life

Great news but still, I'd love all the boxing organizations around the world to have a "No Boxing Event" in Argentina. Banning Lazarte for life is one thing, the f@#cked-up crowd is another thing and they must learn from this. The Argentine Boxing Commission Chief should be ashamed of what happened and that he be sacked for his statements after the fight.

The Philippine Senate sent a strong message against this with a resolution recalling Philippine Ambassador to Argentina Rey Carandang. The resolution also asks the Argentine Ambassador to the Philippines Joaquin Daniel Otero. Some camps were even asking for the Philippine-Argentina ties be cut-off because of the participated in by the unschooled, uneducated Argentinians.

Why not?

Good for you crazy, barbaric, stupid Argentinians!

Xtreme Chess Championship

Reality TV has been around for more than a decade and the 1999 movie EDtv screened out of competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival is a classic example of what a reality TV show is.

I believe chess is hard to sell on TV and sponsors are not really dying to have spend their millions to promote the game compared to football, basketball, billiards and other sports.

But thanks to the chess playing dudes and dudettes for launching the Xtreme Chess Championship, Jennifer Shahade, Greg Shahade and Daniel Meirmon.

64 Things You Need to Know in Chess

Chess maybe as enigmatic as the concept the Holy Trinity in my religion called Catholicism but it is not what it seems. Chess is something you can study over time and learn the intricacies, in and out. Just like any endeavor here on Earth, one has to put in the necessary amount of effort, practice and study in order to master the game.

There are 64 squares on a chessboard and according to John Walker, one has to remember only 64 concepts and ideas to improve in the game. Here is the book Mr. Walker wrote in 2002:

Valentine's Day 2012

Valentine's day is happening Tuesday this week and in our school, students will be performing on stage for our school concert for the community. I will definitely watch this event and most likely take pictures from my bro's Canon 500.

I really believe that all Western celebrations have become so commercialized that it turns off people like me from celebrating them. Still, I'd like to ask you guys, how are you going to celebrate Valentine's day this year? And if you are, do you know the historical background of the celebration? Not that it matters to know but at least you have a deeper understanding of the celebration and that you are not one of those dogs barking at something and when asked why, you simply say because.

As for me, I'll still have my after school tutorial in Merville Park Paranaque and then probably buy cake for dessert when I reach home. This I'll be sharing with my wife and our children.

Casimero KOs Lazarte for IBF Jr Flyweight

After this bout, boxing organizations and promoters must never consider Argentina as a place to hold international boxing matches. Argentinians are backwards, barbaric and has a lot of learning to do when it comes to boxing and sports in general.

Good thing our very own, Johreil Casimero held on and bravely fought amidst Lizarte's dirty tactics and the referee's unprofessional handling of the boxing match to capture the vacant IBF Junior Flyweight Championship.

Empty bottles and chairs were thrown into the ring right before the stupid referee declared Filipino boxer Johreil Casimero the winner of the bout. Fans even punched members of the Casimero team when they rushed into the ring.

Argentina, such a bad place to be!

Truly, cheaters never last or for the matter, never win!

Promoting Positive Filipino Identity

There is so much work for us Filipinos to promote the positive Filipino Identity and we have all the tools to achieve it. Technology and the Internet are the two most accessible tools for us to use in this endeavor. Promoting a positive Filipino identity starts with knowing the things or symbols representing the Filipinos.

Francis Magalona did much of the promotion when he was alive. He did collaborative works with Raymond Red, another Filipino who made a good name for himself and the Filipinos on the global stage of film making:

One God, so many teachings. One world, so many religions. For us teachers, we bring with us our beliefs, morals and interests in the teaching-learning experience and because of this, we must be aware. Nowadays when freedom of religion is a right everyone must have a practice, it is inevitable to know other people's views and opinions, most especially their beliefs or non-belief in a Supreme Being.

In our school, we offer our students two choices for their religion classes from first grade to seventh grade. Religious Education and World Religion. Religious Education is the course for the believers of the Roman Catholicism while for those who aren't, they take World Religion.

Chito Miranda and the gang in New Zealand. Parokya ni Edgar (PNE) gave us the classics like Buloy, Tatlong Araw and Silver Toes. PNE have gone from an unknown, unheard of high school band from San Juan to a world touring Pinoy band known for their crazy live concerts.

One caricature depicting PNE's mainman, Chito Miranda, was sent to me by Sheila of the Filipino Migrant News in New Zealand. In case your wondering why, I've been writing for them since November and so far, its been a smooth ride.

Blitz Chess Team Tournament at WCC

And the weekend tournaments just can be stopped. We have on on February 18, 2012, Saturday at 1 in the afternoon the Blitz Team Tournament, first edition for the first conference. Tournament format will be five round Swiss system, 10 minutes per game and this will be a 3-board team event with maximum 6 players per team.

Team name must be carry the name of a town, a school, a club or a company name. Entry fee per team is 600.00 pesos.

Going into its fourth week, the Wesley Chess Cafe' has successfully organized a weekly chess tournament. This afternoon I finally got the chance to get a copy of the results from Ice Landicho, WCC's resident tournament organizer-slash technical support-slash chess player-slash chessman!

Here is a crazy CCTV capture of a Chinese National running over his girlfriend and stabbing her to death. PNoy and his cabinet must be wondering now how to address this Chinese road rage incident. Will they be sending a letter of apology to the Chinese Government? Will they be sending a Diplomatic Group to explain to them that, with too much MSG in every Chinese food served in Binondo they've eaten, they went crazy.

2012 1st Aniban I Chess Festival

The 2012 1st Aniban I Chess Festival is happening on February 26, 2012, Sunday at 9 in the morning. Organized by Bacoor Chess Club Association, there will be two categories, Non-Master and Kiddies Under- 16.

Tournament format is 7 Round Swiss System, time control of 25/g.

WCC Age Group Chess Challenge

Wesley Chess Cafe will have the 1st WCC Age Group Chess Challenge on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the fourth floor of Robinson's Place, Imus Cavite.

There will be three categories, 14 and Under, 12 and Under and 10 and Under. Tournament format:

• Five Round, Swiss system
• 25/g or 25 minutes per player

Registration is Php 100.00

Champion will bring home a chess board and a trophy, second place winner will get a trophy and third to fifth place winners will win medals.

Education and the Internet

Much has been said about the role of technology and the internet on education. Education as we know it, education as homeschoolers know it and education as non-schooled minds know it. Whichever kind of education you and me knows, technology and internet plays a role in education which you cannot go away with.


According to Google Chromebooks Group Product Manager Rajen Sheth, "this year's graduating class will be the first not to know a world without the Web...this has serious implications for how we educate."
